Baggage Claim Question

If I have a flight itinerary that terminates in at different airport than I will terminate in where will my bags go?

For example if my itinerary goes IAH-LAX-NRT-BKK will I be able to get my bags off the carousel in NRT or will they be sent to BKK because of the flight itinerary?

Thanks in advance

your checked baggage goes to your final destination, you canot pick it up eg. in Tokyo.

Baggage Claim Question

Actually your bags will go to the place they are tagged to which is usually - but not necessarily - your final destination. If you want to short check them to an intermediary point then you'll need to ask at check in and you may have to have a good reason for the request.

If you ask at check in, they might be able to short check your bags to NRT, but it depends on the airline, agent, etc. Best advice is to not plan on checking bags if you are doing what you are doing.

Ah so maybe all is not lost then? Now if I can only find out what a "good" enough reason is for this request. It may just depend on who I'm talking to if its a check-in agent that can do the trick;) In all seriousness I wonder if business related reasons are good enough because thats what it falls under.

Did consider not checking bags but for a 2-week trip this might not be possible, unless you or anyone else can offer methods or information that might make me see differently.

How long is your scheduled connection time at NRT?

Just out of curiosity, is BKK the end of the journey or do you have a return flight on the same ticket?

Actually NRT is the desired end of journey. This is a one way flight itinerary, I do have a return trip back home but its on a separate itinerary and is A-OK.

Tell the check-in agent you bring a bottle of Gin/Brandy/Wine... <whatever> in your checked luggage for a friend/colleague you will meet up in NRT.

Worked for me always without the smallest problem. And with nearly 4 hours connection time shouldn't be a problem. If you want to be sure, really put a bottle in the bag ;)

(and btw... search this forum for hidden city ticketing, because that is what you are trying to do...)

Depending on the carrier, silly lies will often not get you anywhere and shut down any possibility that you might get an exception.

As you are starting on a US carrier, you should know that neither UA, AA nor DL will short-check. They see it as a red flag for hidden city fraud. If you can convince an agent to do it, it will be luck of the draw at the last minute. Don't count on it.

Hmmm all interesting ideas. Havent heard of hidden city ticketing before, but will give it a look for sure if it gets me closer to my goal. I am a bit perturbed about getting hit with the fist of rejection or worse. Its something I simply cannot afford to happen at the time of check-in.

I have never considered packing light so much in my entire life. If i do using hotel laundry service is a must lol.

What can also happen is your bag may not travel on the same plane as you (especially as you have a connection at LAX - they could forget to load your bag, or the plane could have weight issues and they don't load your bag (happened to a friend last week, her case arrived 2 days after she did, but luckily she was at her final destination, so an inconvenience but not catastrophic). If your bag went LAX-BKK directly, because of baggage issues, how difficult would it be for you to go and get the bag back?

Given the prices for hotel laundry service, maybe paying up to change your ticket will be cheaper ;)

Thats pretty scary just to think about >< which is why i need the bag tagged for NRT instead, but alas carry on clothes may have to be my ace in the hole on this one. The whole situation is me sticking my neck out effortlessly and since I'm flying UA it makes matters even worse since I know how strict they can be at times.
