Does codeshare luggage always get checked through?
 

We have a rt international flight where there is one layover each way. At origin will we be able to have our luggage checked through each way? What makes me nervous is there is only a 2 hour layover each way and two different airlines each way. How does this exactly work? Should we have any concerns?

Is this all on 1 PNR/ticket?

If 1 ticket normally bags will be through checked and you do nothing at the transit airport. The airlines will move from 1 flight to the next

New York to Panama to Ecuador (outbound) - United then Copa

Ecuador to Bogota,Colombia to New York (inbound) - Avianca then United

Booked through local TA all Monies paid to Copa. All on 1 ticket.

A two hour layover should be more than sufficient. If you were talking an hour, it would be time to worry.

However, any chance you can rethink that luggage and just do carry-on? It saves you time not having to wait for the luggage at each end.

The most important question here is whether the two operating airlines have a baggage interline agreement. Given that all three airlines involved are major airlines that have been around for a while, I'd be very confident that both Copa and Avianca have interline agreements with UA.

That said, my confidence is worth no more than you paid for it, perhaps less. The best way to find out is to ask Copa and Avianca. (I suggest that because it can be hard to get through to anyone at UA who knows anything, though if you do reach such a person he or she could then answer both parts of the question.)

As all airlines listed are part of the Star Alliance, they should be interlined so that your bags will transfer without an issue. The only problem I can see is if you need to clear customs in Panama or Colombia and claim your bags and recheck them before boarding like here in the US even though you are just transiting the airport.
