Halfway Between London and Sydney...?

The cookie has crumbled in such a way that in September/October/November I will be living in London and Mrs Dannyb111 will be living in Sydney.

I have a week-long flyback planned, but we were also looking to meet somewhere for the weekend to break up the absence a bit.

I am hoping the BA Flyertalk hive mind would be able to suggest best possible locations based on logistics/time difference/flight time/route frequency etc. etc.

We are happy to take a day off either side [though in preference would keep it to one], and would prefer oneworld.

Ideally we would both get to wherever we meet by c. 5-6pm on Friday evening, then back into work straight from the airport on Monday.

I've looked at the obvious HKG/SIN/KUL/TYO - anybody got any good ideas?

Bali ! Nice and romantic and a bit away from the daily grind. Fly to SIN/KUL and a short hop to DPS. Direct flights from SYD. Not exactly half way, but convenient. DXB is also easy.

LAX, CPT

^ ^ ^ for location. Not the easiest though.

Doesn't Qantas have a direct flight to JNB ?

LAX is good to. Or SFO. Totally forgot about that way round. :)

LAX would be good as a lot more traffic to SYD than SFO - though we met there for the weekend back in January so somewhere different may be good.

Nothing direct to CPT, but there is to JNB and the JNB timings are good from the UK [less good due to time difference from SYD].

Bali I like, but probably pushing it time wise for a long weekend as the transfer will add on several hours each way.

Currently JNB, TYO or HKG leading the way...

Why not just say "there aren't any direct flights CPT-SYD on OW"?

Yes. With the A380.

It wasn't about direct flights but maybe he did not know about the SYD-JNB flight.

QF63 on Fri morning from SYD, connect via JNB.
QF64 back

3-class 747 if I recall.

I suggested CPT over JNB, but OP seems happy enough with JNB ... so all's good. :)

Note Qantas are re-launching their SYD-SFO route in December. Maybe too late for you this time but one to keep in mind if you find yourself down there longer than planned.

Re the others, I second HKG and TYO - both fantastic cities. If you've only got Friday-Monday I would definitely go somewhere with direct flights from both LON and SYD. A misconnect would really eat into a very short weekend.

Bangkok could also work. Depends if you want a city/humid/shopping/relaxing etc.

I don't think you can beat HKG for long weekend (plenty of well timed OW flights for both of you), and loads to do.

You could also maybe do PEK (if you don't mind getting a visa), and spend the weekend climbing the Great Wall and seeing the Forbidden City?

henkybaby Jul 13, 2015 2:54 pm

Meet at BKK and take a quick flight to Koh Samui... Problem is the difference in arrival times. LHR to BKK arrives 6 hrs before the SYD-BKK arrives. October is a good month, November would be better.
