Passports needed to Guam, Saipan

I live in South Florida and want to travel to these US Territories in the Pacific. Do I need to get a US Passport to travel here? Delta and United fly there and some of their connections are through a foreign country. If I don't transverse these foreign countries am I able to go with just a State of Florida ID?

Moderators please feel free to move to a more appropriate forum if necessary.

Are you an American citizen? If so, you do not need a passport to travel to the United States, assuming you are not flying through a second country go get there.

It's the same as flying to Hawaii or Puerto Rico.

My gut feeling would say no, if no foreign transit. I don't recall needing a passport when zinwent through Guam. Of course, I would strongly recommend checking Timatic to be sure.

For immigration purposes, yes, no passport needed if the flight is a non-stop between US states/territories; but it's a bit different than flying to/from Hawaii or even Puerto Rico -- at least for customs purposes.

If I recall correctly for Saipan you do need your birth certificate as proof of citizenship, but that's all as long as you go via Hawaii. If you go via Japan then you need a passport.

Having said that, I don't know if the birth certificate is ever actually checked or not. Guam you can do with just your drivers license.

Good thing the question was about immigration purposes, then.

For some customs purposes, immigration-related status of the passenger may be relevant even when the question doesn't involve transiting foreign states in say Asia or elsewhere around the Pacific Basin. It won't hit most people.

A passport is needed if one flies from the US mainland or Hawaii to Japan then Guam.

A passport is good to carry if flying from Hawaii to Guam in case of diversion though it's very unlikely that it would divert to any foreign country.

Guam is US territory but some proof of citizen is useful because people from Red China go to Guam without a visa and the U.S. is afraid they will sneak off the island. No joke.

Get the passport! It will pay back in spades, if you have any interest in this forum.

If one if flying the island hopper, the chances are very high that one will not only divert to a foreign county but will actually land in one regardless, Fed. States of Micronesia.

True but one has to pretty much go out of their way to fly the island hopper. It's been a while since I looked at it but didn't think it aligned well with flights from the mainland.

There is no immigration check HNL-GUM or GUM-SPN. However there is an admissibility eligibility check SPN-GUM and GUM-HNL. Documents proving your status will be helpful.

No that isn't happening yet. Mainland Chinese can only go to the CNMI without a visa. HK/Macao Chinese can go to both Guam and the CNMI without a visa or ESTA.

Actually two. The Marshall Islands too.

Sorry, I assumed if I asked do I need a US Passport, that I am a United States Citizen. :D

I have traveled through Japan and Korea going to the Philippines and do not remember the transit asking for my passport, just identification since I was not entering their country. My passport expired as I wasn't using it and didn't think to renew it, thus the question above. :td:

Thank you all for letting me know.

No passport needed, anymore than if you were flying from MIA-MCO. Others properly note that when flying routes where diversions or even changes of plan may mean other nations, e.g., Japan, FSM, MI, it makes sense to bring your passport.

I would hate to be in GUM, scheduled to fly back to the US via HNL and have to pass on a chance to spend a few days in TYO because I've left my passport on the Mainland.

Although no passport is *needed*, you will meet a CBP officer for both SPN-GUM (in SPN) and GUM-HNL (in GUM). With a passport, you'll be done in seconds. Without, there could be more time needed.
