I have never used the bag itself lol, but I have come close hundreds of times. Once I managed to hold it until we deplaned and I ran for the mens room..luckily at my base airport so I knew where it was. Once I lost it in a trash can at PHX in full view of everyone at the USairways gates..luckily it was later at night on a weekday, so not that busy.
Onboard once, food poisoning began to rear it's ugly head. I had felt fine when I boarded, but as boarding went on I began feeling worse and worse. Ran upstream through the boarders to the lav, whereupon I released everything..from both ends but not at the same time. I came out to see the worried looks of the FA and VDB'd myself due to illness. Worse, this was one of the rare times I checked bags so they had to offload them. I am sure it caused delay. While in the terminal talking to staff I had to have another bout of the hurlie whirliees and managed to make it to the men's room. Now I see why you chose your handle.:D |
This thread seems fitting for me to post in. I'm sick right now and traveling :(

I've used the barf bags more times that I can count. I used to fly CLT-EWN on a prop plane on a regular basis and threw up every single time due to turbulence. I also got food poisoning on a flight from JFK-CDG and spent 90% of the flight hugging the toilet.
I flew once from SFO-LAX and was coughing and hacking and got a fever. I feel guilty about that one since two days later I was diagnosed with pneumonia  |
Not my story but my brother and his wife had a bout of food poisoning while on holidays. They were up most of the night throwing up and had to go home the next day. Rescheduling was not an option as he had to get back to work the next day.
They had to return the rental car at the airport which was the most difficult part. My brother had the worst of it and only he was the authorized driver. They left extra early so he could pull over every few blocks to vomit while my sister in law held a sick bag out (which made her rather more queasy). Thankfully the flight home was only 90 minutes long and passed uneventfully. Back at home, they spent the night in separate rooms so nobody had to deal with each other's sickness (and each person had a bathroom to themselves!). I received regular updates by text since we live in the same city and was prepared to do an emergency medication drop if required. |
I had a myocardial infarct in may 2000.
I still fly 10 to 20 segments/year but often feel sick underway, it's no fun. But a few weeks ago flying out CPH, had some food in the business lounge (do you want the name?) When I decided it was time to walk to the gate I did not make it to the restroom :td: Luckily so to speak, I always have reserve clothing (good idea if you are on a 4 leg trip) and managed to clean up in the restroom. I did feel bad getting into my seat and crew were very compassionate. I had 2.5 hours to kill at Al Mourjan Doha lounge and had a glass of water, not the best way to spend some time at Al Mourjan... The next flight was uneventful ;) |

A hard thread to read. I never even thought about this. Now I can understand why they are a problem. Yikes.

I've never actually used an air sickness bag but there have been 1-2 flights over the past 10 years when I felt suddenly queasy and kept it handy. Twice in that time I have canceled flights the morning of departure because I was feeling sick to my stomach and didn't want to fly while violently ill.

A few days ago i was on DY lax-cph and with only 1 hour left in 10, some fat scandinavian kid..perhaps 19 years old, decided to throw up in the aisle right between the two lav doors. Wish he had used the bag, or at least managed to get into the lav. Nope. The cabin crew was almost in full hazmat gear cleaning it up. I was slightly amused considering how unpleasant they were in general.

Lump in my throat is present.
I am not looking forward to my flight in a few hours. :( |
Out of curiosity, are there still barf bags in the seat pockets? I don't remember seeing any in my last few recent flights, but I'm not on a plane THAT often.

2 weeks ago I had a last minute business meeting I had to fly to. I had some ear pain the day before but didn't have a chance to get to the Doctor before I left.
Needless to say, on the way home I seriously thought my ears were going to explode. The pain was so bad I was almost in tears. I held back the tears and went to the ER when I got home. Turns out I had a double ear infection. OUCH! |
