New twist on carry on wars - musical instruments

US DOT just issued "clarifications" on carry on for musical instruments. This makes a difference to me because guitars are one of the things addressed.

Bottom line is that if there is room in overheard storage, the airline cannot prohibit you from carrying a guitar on board. In addition (and this is where it gets potentially problematic) if someone boards early with a guitar and the guitar takes up the overhead space for 2 or 3 rows, the FA can *not* force you to take it out if the bins get full and other passengers can't find space. So basically an early boarder can take a guitar, put it in and take up space for several other passengers, and the later boarders lose.

That might lead to a real 'strum' at the boarding gate.

*gets hat and coat*.....

As someone who likes to listen to music, this really strikes a chord with me.

So the DOT sets a measure to note that there is no bass for removing an instrument from the overhead if someone does they are fluting with treble.

And, of course, it will leave some passengers with a real axe to grind.

Possibly under their own carryons

I would not want some guys carryon to be pushing my 4000+ dollar guitar or bass, while I find travelling with trumpets to be completely non-stressfull when it is the case to take a guitar or a bass I would normally book a business class seat for the trip as that would almost certainly take away a lot of the stress involved..........gone are the days I travelled with my instruments though =(

Well that's a plucky policy

Seriously though, DOT shows a real bias in favour of early-boarding guitar-toting passengers while Air Canada demands violas are checked in.

They must be allowed in the overhead bins if they are loaded early.

I'm sure they could be changed if you were to drum up enough support. perhaps there could be some punitive restrictions

The first seven puns weren't that bad. The last three were flirting with the line. The moderator could delete the post if any of them went over that line. But apparently no pun intendid.

These musical puns are falling flat. Let's give it a rest, or someone will take note and get their staff, or even make an overture to the moderato.
