Stand-by questions
 
I am new to this so forgive if I ask dumb questions here. My wife and I have started traveling for the fun of it. I am lucky enough to get several days off at a time so would like to take some small trips. How do stand-up work in general, Can we go to the airport without a ticket, go to counter and ask to be put on the stand by list? Not really care where we go, found a flight, wait and hope we get one (if not go home) and get the flight at a cheap price? It would be fun to just take off for airport not knowing where you may go. Dumb I know

There are no standby tickets you can buy. Some airlines let you standby for an earlier flight if you already have a ticket.

Buying a ticket on the day of the flight is usually very expensive, as cheaper fares have advanced purchase requirements or the cheaper fare buckets have been closed.

Precisely. You might think that, at the airport, airlines would sell any unsold inventory for dirt cheap. This is not the case, despite airline seats being a perishable, like food in the grocery store. It's a service, not a good, and if this policy existed, then everyone would wait until the last minute and the pricing strategy would self-implode. Airlines would have no forward visibility as there is no incentive to book early.

Have you looked into being a courier?

Even the days of being a courier are pretty much over due to fedex and ups.
