Flying to an Olympic City

I would love to go to the Olympics but have never gotten organised to do it. I don't have a desire to go to Brazil in 2016 so maybe it might have to be Tokyo in 2020.

I was just wondering if anyone recalls previous years. Were flights to Olympic cities dearer during the Olympics?

I imagine I'd need a fortune to cover premium airfare, hotel accommodation and tickets to events.

Simple answer is yes, more expensive during worldwide events like the Olympics and World Cup. Supply/Demand.

Currently showing this for JAL

Adult x1 6,285.00 $ (AUD)
Tax & Airline Surcharge
146.34 $ (AUD)

That seems pretty fair for a 10 hour flight. Wonder how much extra the Olympics might make it.

Total 6,431.34 $ (AUD)

I can only assume that's a J ticket?

How have you got a booking quote for 2020?

Yes, business class. I don't have a quote. I've been thinking about it for a while and thought I might need $30,000 for 2 people. I'm a planner so putting aside money now in to a bank account would be way easier than parting with 30K all at once.

I think, for example using this current World Cup, you're looking at 20-40% extra on top of a normal fare, certainly for Y. Could be more but that's just from what I've seen when I had a quick look at flights to Rio about a month before the cup started.

You have said the fare is 6,285AUDs - that's your quote. What dates is that travelling from and til?

Olympics are July 24 to August 9 2010. Somewhere around there for maybe only a week due to the cost.

No. I'm just looking for this years cost at the time the Olympics is on - July to August.

That's not really worth looking at as it won't be the same. Those are just seasonal variations in price, i.e. generally higher in the summer (in the UK anyway). The price over those dates in 2020 when the actual event is taking place will be more.

The event is in July - August. I looked at the same dates. That's all I can do as I can't get a quote for 2020. That's why I asked if anybody had an idea of the increase so I could get a ROUGH guide.

That's a rough guide. Not really sure what more you're wanting?

Nothing! You asked a question and I answered it.

Thank you for your advice about the % increase for the World Cup.

Excellent. Hope you get to see the Olympics. I'd love to go, too!

My husband just said "30K.. that's stupid". He said we could instead go to the Qatar World Cup because it will be taken off Qatar and played in a city closer to home... possibly on our doorstep in Australia. lol.
