Five Thirty Eight estimates fuel costs of extra weight...

They use Southwest as a proxy example, but the cost estimates would apply to other airlines.

However, for an industry where pennies saved on each flight can lead to thousands or millions of dollars in yearly savings, the incentive for controlling weight — and even eliminating olives — is easy to understand.

Smaller airlines can offer more services and creature comforts then the big boys since shaving a penny here and there won't make much in the long end. But like Delta said when they bought that refinery. If they save a penny on a gallon fuel they are saving MILLIONS considering the billions of gallons of fuel they use.

There are two simple things that I thought for years airlines should do to lighten their loads, but they never do:

1. When they announce in the gate area that boarding is going to start soon, why not put in the script that passengers have time to make a bathroom trip, and identify the closest bathroom.

2. Why not have a big trash can at the end of every jetway. So when you are standing there, right before you get on the plane, and waiting for the line to move you can drop a few things in the trash can instead of taking them on the plane.

While these two steps won't save millions of dollars, they certainly can save some money.

LOL....
We need a bigger rolleyes emoticon here on FT.

If the big airlines would save millions, the smaller ones would save hundreds of thousands.

Never fails

Can never get why during boarding there's always a couple people that need to use the restroom. With all the time in the world prior to boarding, why ?
Unless you're old, or a child, or have a UTI, suck it up until the seat belt sign is off.

Really? Water, cellphones, laptops, and in flight entertainment? Why not just tell the airlines to go bankrupt and then they will save billions every year on fuel! Why do we even entertain this goofyness. What frequent business flier do you know who does not want/need all those things? Especially in this forum, we should be encouraging them to improve customer service not reduce it.

For example: I love that the airlines are putting UV lights in the restrooms to kill germs between use. Sure it cost them more energy to leave that light on, but the traveling health of your customers should be more important, so it makes sense.

Get USA Healthy !

Here is an idea to get USA to be healthier.

At boarding, announce " today we are carrying apprx. XXXX thousands of pounds of human beings....these airplanes were designed to carry THAT MINUS XXX lbs. Also the seats are not going to get any wider, pitch will decrease ! If we carry the average human we would save XXX gallons of fuel, save those dollars to reduce ticket prices.

SO DO YOUR PART !

Tight connections come to mind as a pretty good reason to have to go on the plane, and a lot of people are tense about missing flights, so they may relax once on the plane and suddenly feel the urge.
