10 classic airliners you can still fly on... but hurry!
Time is short for flying on classic airliners, with many now consigned to memory in the name of progress. Today, most Airbus and Boeing aircraft look alike, but we remember the days of piston and early jet airliners filling our skies with noise and smoke. All is not lost, however. Here are 10 classic airliners still going strong and flying passengers today…

Awesome!!
Thanks for sharing. I need to get on a few of those. As noted, if you want to fly an MD-11, hurry, YYZ & YUL service end in september! Also, I've seen the Cubana Illyushin IL96 at HAV. I was waiting to board my flight when the started boarding it for GIG. 18 people got in. Not a very profitable run... |
I have been on the EAA TriMotor (Manassas VA, Jun 2006), a pair of DC-3s (Air New England, LaGuardia - New Bedford - Hyannis, Apr 1973; Aero Virgin Islands, San Juan - St Thomas, Dec 1979), and a DC-4 (actually a USAF VC-54D, Ithaca - Wright-Patterson AFB - Eglin AFB and return Eglin - Syracuse, Feb 1972)

I'm not sure if variants of the 747 and DC-9 should be on the list.
If a DC-9-20 is on the list, then I think the DC-9-10 should as well. I flew a DC-9-10 from Kenya to Somaliland a few years ago, not sure if it is still flying. One old aircraft not on the list is the Grumman Goose. I flew one a few years ago from Dutch Harbor to a nearby island. Very cool. Since it doesn't pressurize, the aircraft may have a long lifespan. |
Saha Airlines still flies the 707, that should be on the list.
EDIT: Ooops they have gone out of business, didnt know :) |

It felt classic at the time but being on a LIAT DC-8-300 with unallocated seating felt like a "vintage" experience for sure. I was on one of them in a charter from Sharm to Luxor a couple of years back too.
But for me there will only be one G-JOEY the Trislander. A lovely bundle of coffin shaped goodness. |
I'd add the Ilyushin 62 to any list like this (I flew it about a decade ago PEK-FNJ) and the VC-10, as well.

Too bad Air Chatham no longer runs in Tonga....was looking forward to the DC-4!
