FT "I've visited half the world" (98 or more independent nations / countries) thread
Lady JDiver just reminded me our visit to Andorra last month meant I'd visited half (98) of the world's independent 196 nations (she was just rubbing salt in the wound - she has been to more than I have, including Belarus, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria... which I am not going to!)
We have a "countries I've been to" thread (see link below), but some of us have taken liberties with what we call a country (the thread mentions reference to over 250 countries, even though it lists a World Atlas source which claims [I]"Many sources offer different answers, and depending on the source, there are 189, 191, 192, 193, 194, 195 or 196 independent countries in the world today." (Seems not to include Kosovo, Timor Leste, etc.)
Poll - how many countries have you visited? has members listing countries they have been to - in any number.
Travelers' Century Club, or TCC, is a club for people who have visited 100 or more of the world's countries and territories. They claim over 320 such, "although some are not actually countries in their own right, they have been included because they are removed from parent, either geographically, politically or ethnologically". $100 initiation, $85 annual. (FT is free...)
So, let's use an existing list. International Travel News lists 196 autonomous and fully independent nations (places like Åland, Aruba, Curacao, French Polynesia, Saba or St. Martin / Sint Maarten don't count, as they are dependencies or territories of another nation). I'll add this to the Wiki, as this is likely to change - e.g. Scotland could theoretically become a nation, Ukraine could be at peril, changes occur with some regularity, etc. (ITN offers subscribers a "100 Nations" certificate, one reason they maintain this list.)
I am choosing not listing places I have merely connected with another flight or stopped for a technical stop on an aircraft, as suggested by OzStamps in the thread linked to.
My list of 99 nations (as of July 2016):
NORTH AMERICA (3): Canada, Mexico, United States
MIDDLE AMERICA (18): Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago
SOUTH AMERICA (8): Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
EUROPE (40): Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Vatican City
ASIA/MIDDLE EAST (14): Armenia, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam (Qatar, Sri Lanka coming up Aug 2016)
AFRICA (9): Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe
OCEANIA (7): Australia, Fiji, Micronesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Vanuatu
(7 Continents, including Antarctica)
If you've visited 98 or more independent nations, welcome to the "club". If you haven't (yet), may you live long and prosper and if you choose to do so, make it easily and comfortably. If you've managed more than a mere half, congratulations!

Congrats!^
Personally I use the number of UN member states, though obviously no method is perfect. I'm not half-way there yet, but hope to be within the next 10 years (and to be honest, there are quite a few countries I'm not interested in visiting or would like to, but most likely won't due to health/safety regulations).

82 so far, UN list plus 10 personal add ons (Kosovo, Palestina etc.)
I'm excited to think where I'll be celebrating #100.
Did you think about it JDiver? Seems to be Ukraine by your plans.

Yeah, we were scheduled to see Sevastopol, Yalta and Odessa this September (MV Star Pride). So far, Crimea is a no-go, and has been substituted with a couple of nice north Turkey ports; Odessa is still on the schedule. I'll have to modify my post - we did visit one or two others according to Lady JDiver, and will visit Iceland in July.

I haven't yet hit half of this list, so I will respect the OP and not claim to be a member here. But the list seems to be a bit flawed. For instance Bermuda, while an overseas territory of Britain, has its own government, economy, currency, etc., but its not on the list. Yet Vatican City and San Marino seem rather less than full nations nations to me and they made the list.
