700 mph 777?

Can there be any truth to this story?

A fairly reliable friend just returned to LAX from China on China Airlines. We said he flew a special 777 that was capable of going 700 miles an hour. He said there was speed indicator in his first class cabin that showed this speed.

Chinese propaganda?
Ambien related hallucination?
Reality?

Wind & aircraft speed in the air = ground speed
With a good tail wind high ground speed is possible

Exactly all depends on the winds aloft. Everything is relative.

I think your friend was looking at the IFE screen and it showed ground speed as others have noted.

A lot of commercial aircraft can do 700mph ground speed, not just a 777. Usually winter jet streams are stronger and can be around 200kts at times. When it's right on your tail, you will get it. Stinks going other way, though!

Here is a 777 traveling at 735 knots = 845mph!

As noted, this is aircraft speed + tailwind, which can run upwards of 250mph. 777 cruising speed is 590mph, so 110mph tailwind to hit 700 isn't out of the ordinary. I've seen 800 once or twice.

Depends. I'd take 2 extra hours of drinking Dom over seeing family any day...

I've been on a 777 that showed 715mph. I was suprised as I'd never seen a speed that high before.

I took a flight SFO to LHR that exceeded 700 mph. Very strong tailwinds. We arrived in LHR waaaay early.

I bet you still had to hold at Ockham and then wait an hour on the ground for a gate to open up....:)

As people have mentioned, 700kts+ ground speed is not unheard of with a good tailwind. However, I'm pretty sure 700kts true air speed is beyond the design limits for any B777.

I've seen the IFE system display ground speeds of 750+ mph (near/over Mach 1) a few times while flying eastward over the Pacific. It depends on how strong the jet stream is.

I've been over 700 as well. Tailwinds

Just to clarify though, 750 ground speed is not near/over Mach 1. Mach is a measure of the relative motion depending on the surrounding air velocity.
