SkyMall May Be Going Out of Business

If you're like me and enjoy pulling the latest edition of the SkyMall magazine out of your seat-back pocket just to laugh at the new kooky, gimmicky products featured in its pages, I've got some bad news for you. We're in the minority and the number of passengers actually making purchases from those pages of products has been dwindling. For years now, SkyMall has had a difficult time appealing to passengers. Last year alone the company lost $3.2 million and with that much red, the company may soon be no more.

Tim at FrequentFlier has suggested the possibility of a rewards program keeping the magazine afloat, but would that be enough?

Speaking of SkyMall, if you haven't yet seen this Tumblr account, it may be worth a read: http://iwriteforskymall.tumblr.com/

No wonder. Who buys that crap? The same people that 'bought' the stuff at The Sharper Image?

Besides the stuff they sold being "crap", the shipping charges were very high.

SkyMall + increasing number of planes with WiFi = if you do see a piece of crap you must have in the pages of SkyMall, a Google search will quickly tell you if it's of any actual quality, and then if you STILL must have it, you can get it on Amazon for cheaper.

And that's how a company like SkyMall goes under.

In the past, SkyMall was my last-resort reading material when the aircraft was on the ground (or in the air below 10K feet). Now that PED use is allowed from gate to gate, I can read my own material. Haven't actually flipped through a SkyMall (or read any other in-flight magazine) since that change.

With Sharper Image and the surviving Brookstone brick-n-mortar stores, you can at least touch & feel them, especially when I'm at a trade show or conference nearby, with time to waste - and these stores would sometimes have sales, LOL. That is, if you can't wait until they hit Amazon or eBay.

I don't recall ordering anything at all from SkyMall, ever - as they're never on sale. Brookstone is clearing out their regular iPad protective case for as low as $6.99 and now, that's cheap - the slightly better ones @ $9.99 - must be overstocked again. SkyMall - forgetaboutit.

Probably got a few old copies in the basement from the 1980's next to UA's Vis-a-Vis magazine.

I need that ostrich pillow now. I don't want to see Skymall go away, and I need some quiet time to reflect
