Why do bellmen remove all luggage tags?

Noticed the last few hotels in Europe that when bags are delivered, all the tags have been removed. Not just the checked bag tags but the ID tags with contact info as well. It's not a huge deal but more of a pet peeve. I don't like to write a new name tag for each bag on each leg/airline.

I asked the bellman today what happened to ALL the tags. He shrugged and said its for guest convenience so they don't get their hands sticky. I said the small ones with my address should stay on. He shrugged and said they usually just tear off everything. This was at the Four Seasons.

I know you're kidding, but the info could be valuable to ACTUAL thieves. They'd love to know the addresses of people that are away on vacation.

They want the Delta Diamond tags to sell on eBay.

Maybe better idea to have "permanent" tags with the info on the inside, so they've really gotta make an effort. Only temp tags I use have destination lodging address so airline can get em to the right place if there's a CF. :)

You are saying you use the sticky ID tags the airlines hand out at check-in, on your bags. Is that right?

That is really not a good idea silver-tis. It is in fact a known way to end up getting your house broke in to. Someone at your home airport reads the tag and gets your contact info. Reads the destination tag and can estimate the minimum amount of time you are likely to be gone for and then phones a 'friend' who visits your place for a 5 finger discount on your goodies.

You should be using a permanent ID tag with the info not visible on the outside at all when you travel.

Is it with a specific chain? I have worked at hotels all over Europe and we didn't touch the tags. The only ones we removed were the claim tags for the hotel itself to eliminate any confusion. But, your airline tags, and stickers for the leg of the airline were always left intact, unless of course the guest requested removal of the tags.
