OK to put a paperclip on page marking visa?

If it OK to put a paperclip marking a visa on my USA passport? I have about a dozen visas and the proper one can be hard to find. Last time I traveled, the lazy gate agent at customer-hostile United threw my passport at me after 2 seconds in frustration. I seek to avoid irritating lazy and mean gate agents in the future. I could do that by avoiding United and flying, say, Singapore. But that isn't always possible.

Regardless of the answer to your question, avoiding UA is advisable these days if possible.

I don't see any problem with a paperclip.

My solution is to use a sticky flag that protrudes from the page. When I no longer need it, I can easily remove it and keep it on the back inside page of my passport. When I'm really on top of things, I remember to put it on the page where I am stamped into Europe. The border agent will look for it when I leave. My passport is now 72 pages long and filled with stamps, so it is quite tedious when I forget to do this.

Great minds think alike!

I just got my new passport last week and the first thing I did was put three of those flags in the back of my passport. While I have not travelled internationally for a few years, they always came in handy to make things easy... I also use it to get stamps on the page I want... :)

You stay classy United Airlines!

Seriously though, paper clip is a great idea and should be fine. You can always remove it if its a problem anyway.

Yes, but you are also a sane and reasonable person :p

I've had zero issue with a paperclip in my travels all over the world, except when entering.... the US.

My passports have gone through a lot of stress. Japan puts staples in them, many officials throw it around, China bends it...so a paper clip would be a token of appreciation. I could definitely see US immigration being irritated about it, so that's an even better reason to do so.

Only a dozen? :-) My experience is that some airline and airport people dislike being "pointed" to the correct page (as if you're trying misdirection?) and will deliberately ignore sticky tags or paper clips. Not much you can do about it.
