You can hardly evaluate the sport properly wearing that kind of gear!

They should really just quit giving the Olympics to places that don't already have a capable infrastructure. It isn't feasible to construct an entire city and the appropriate infrastructure, transport, venues, and so on, for a two-week sporting event. They're spending billions constructing something which will never receive that sort of use again. Brazil will have all of the same problems, added with the fact that they're even more incompetent. Some of the FIFA venues for this summer are completely screwed (one likely unable to complete in time), they botched their transport upgrades and will be using tents instead of terminals (as promised), one key rail line hasn't even been started, and there's already a massive shortage of acceptable hotels...how are they supposed to run an Olympics?
The IOC should only consider applicant cities with appropriate infrastructure already in place, especially with a sufficient number of hotel rooms already built. Building loads of new hotels that won't be used again is ridiculous. Sure, there can be leeway given when improvements or upgrades need to be made, but as in the case of Sochi where nearly all of the infrastructure had to be created for these games, it becomes far too difficult to complete on-time and becomes unsustainable when they'll be left to rot after the events. But none of this will happen, because the IOC doesn't care when countries spend more and more to one-up the last, not to mention the IOC is as corrupt as the next couple of Olympics hosts. $50 billion to host a two-week event is shameful in countries like Russia or Brazil with such high poverty levels. It seems like the IOC thinks they're doing them a favor as charity cases, and they're generating investment in the infrastructure to improve the lives of the locals. Bollocks. Sochi is Putin's Berchdesgaden (where Eagle's Nest is) and the money spent on these improvements will not improve the lives of 99.7% of Russians -- the 0.3% being those who took their share of bribes/siphoned money from the budget, or the few people who happen to live in the area who aren't confined to Dagestan. But I digress... What people seem to forget is that this is all about the SPORT. While these are certainly major stuff-ups, the Olympics will go ahead and it will work out perfectly fine. There were few mistakes on this scale but the run-up to London 2012 was full of people (even Mitt Romney!) denigrating it and saying it's going to fail etc. because of various issues. It is now widely acknowledged to be one of the best Olympic games of the modern era. I don't know if it's because it's Russia, or you're all just natural pessimists, but I see no reason why the games can't still turn out to be a success. Ditto with the Brazilian World Cup. |
If you throw used toilet paper in "bins" (instead of in the toilet), if the "bins" aren't emptied often, wouldn't the stench be annoying after a while?

While I agree this has been a PR disaster for Russia, I completely disagree that from now on it should only be in places that can already host it. So that's half a dozen locations for eternity then (assuming they even want to host the games so regularly)?

IMO, this thread was supposed to be humorous - a focus on all the silly mistakes Russia has made while planning these Olympic games (also, what posters like to do with their toilet paper). To suggest that this follows from some anti-Russian bias demands complete ignorance (willful or otherwise) of these games. If they were any success, people would be going (yes, people go to Winter games too) like they did to Vancouver. And then there's the human rights' abuses, people getting kicked out of their homes, transportation issues, etc. So far, enough to validate one's opinion that the Olympics should be constrained to appropriate venues. |

None of that stuff has anything to do with the actual olympics whatsoever. Yet more damning PR for Russia yes, but how exactly is it affecting who wins the Ice Hockey or who wins the Slalom? |
No need to put words in my mouth while you try to insult me, I said you suggested it. Which you did.
So apparently lackluster attendance doesn't have "anything to do with the actual olympics whatsoever", a very interesting viewpoint which I'm sure the IOC doesn't share. How about substandard facilities for the athletes, and injury-causing slopes? Is that relevant enough to 'the actual olympics'? |

This is not a credible statement. Sorry.
They also use "family cloth" instead of toilet paper. And reusable cloth pads for ladies. It happens more than you think. *shudders* |
