I recall walking about 10 blocks every evening from my downtown Houston hotel to get to various restaurtants. Fortunately, the weather was very accomodating for a walk.

Yes, but once you've walked a thousand miles you'll fall down at someone's door. The idea of this thread is how far you'll walk without falling down. :D

What if you're on your way from misery to happiness today, aha?

I took the bus to streets that I could walk down...

I will walk 5-6 km a day in Singapore easily. By choice. Even with such a great public transport system.

But then again it's warm here all year round so unless it's raining (or I'm running late) I always prefer to leg it. :)

When I took a trip to Scandinavia last summer, I walked a minimum of ten miles a day for a week and a half or so (as measured by a little pedometer my fiance carried with him).

At home in Boston, I don't have a car (since I live in the city, and our street system has been not-so-affectionately described as a pile of spaghetti), so I walk or take the subway everywhere I go.

Like for most here, it depends. Nice weather? I can easily walk 30-40 minutes to a business meeting. Nice way to collect my thoughts and see the city. As a tourist? I can walk all day. Breaks for lunch etc., of course.

2 miles is fine.

Really depends on circumstances.

I'm not particularly bothered about weather ("it's not bad weather, just the wrong clothes") so am happy to wander in the rain, or when it's -10C in Scandinavia. I'm also happy walking where you're in the traffic (India in particular) - in general, I'm not a fan of taxis and will generally avoid where possible.

Certainly, if it's under half a mile, I usually won't consider anything but walking, and I'm perfectly happy walking for an hour if there's no time pressure. But if it's more, then I'll generally cycle - I have a couple of Dutch bikes that will carry pretty much anything I need them to. I can happily go 20 miles or so on one of those without preparation, but much over 5 and I'm looking for alternatives - usually bus/train or trains where I can take the bike on.

I don't generally drive (and I don't live in a city) - my commute is a mix of walking, train and cycling (and the occasional bus/metro). Any heavy shopping, including groceries, is delivered. If I need to head into the country, or get something heavy, then we can use MrsStut's car, generally at the weekends.

But it's still circumstances. I'm happy to walk or cycle in torrential rain on my commute, because I know I have waterproofs with me, and there's a shower available at each end. I wouldn't do the same in a suit headed to a client site. Similarly, if I know I can relax and amble through an Indian city to visit a vendor in smart-casual clothing, I will. But if it's 45C and humid, and simply raising your arm brings you out into a sweat, I'll probably hail that auto-rickshaw. If I'm in Scandinavia and it's comfortably below zero, I'll likely have layers and layers, but you need to keep moving. Wrapped up too warm and you'll sweat - stop and you'll freeze. It's a fine balance!

OTOH, I could walk 15-20mins in a suit in Paris. Not too long ago, I walked a roundtrip of 50mins daily from lodging to school, including a handful of mornings in fairly heavy snowing conditions (Western European not North American standards)

Where in Singapore is 5 bus stops a 30-40 minute walk? Out in the HDB areas, 5 bus stops can be as close as 750 away. There are multiple stops near me which are 150-200m apart. I live 6.5km from my office, and its 32 stops.

When in Europe, relying on trains, we would walk miles and miles and were ok with it. It was part of the experience not having a vehicle with us. I much prefer to travel Europe in a car though. The trains are not flexible for our style and kids. Not sure if its any cheaper taking the train neither.
