Checking in baggage the day before?

How soon can I check in baggage at the airport counter before a flight.
Departing from MSY, for an early AM trip, I would like to check my bags in the night before and just go through security on the morning of the trip. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks.

Usually not. I believe there is a 4 hr rule.

Pretty sure it's not going to happen. I know it wouldn't here.

OP doesn't specify the carrier or the destination, but I don't know any US domestic carrier which would permit this.

Even if the airline did allow this, I imagine this would be a recipe for a lost bag.

I agree. AFAIK, doubt you could do this that early. But forget about whether this is allowed or not - don't think I would want to leave my bag within the airport overnight - even behind the scenes. Not voluntarily, anyway. But to each their own.

Not directly relevant to the OP's question... but this is quite common in Europe, and quite popular from what I can tell. I've used it, and so have other members of my family, and have never had any problems.

Definitely have done this in VIE with LH, and away from Europe, with SQ in SIN I believe.

This, for sure.

Not sure. Earlier this month I checked a bag at 9 a.m. for an 8 p.m. flight.
