HELP NEEDED WITH FLIGHT ASAP! Please help!

Hi, I need a flight today from San Diego to Dallas (DFW) today. Returning tomorrow. CHEAP! Any advice or ideas? I have a job interview tomorrow morning! PLEASE HELP! I really, really want this job but cannot afford the $$$! Thanks! (I need something under a few hundred - at the most!) Thanks.

gfunkdave Dec 17, 2013 2:18 pm

Last minute fares are going to be expensive. That's how airfares work.

Best advice is to go to kayak.com and see what you can find.

Your erstwhile employer isn't paying for you to travel there for an interview? I'd think twice about working for such a company...

LadyPhoenix Dec 17, 2013 2:21 pm

He or she needs that job bad, seeing how he or she is cross-posting all over the place...last seen in the Mileage Run forum...

BearX220 Dec 17, 2013 2:23 pm

You can buy AA355 departing SAN at 500pm today for $466 and return tomorrow on Southwest 37 departing Love FIeld at 330p for $460.

Not cheap, but that represents a $400+ savings over the current lowest roundtrip fare of $1300+ quoted on Expedia.

coutura Dec 17, 2013 2:24 pm

You're out of luck with this short of notice. The cheapest I'm seeing is around $700. If you had more time you probably could've suffered the train or a bus, but again, it's probably too short of notice to get those (not necessarily price wise, but schedule wise).

If you have friends with miles they wouldn't mind burning for this trip, this would be a good time to be nice to them.

jrl767 Dec 17, 2013 2:41 pm

I am NOT advocating you do this, but there are those who would in a heartbeat

SAN-DFW, AA355 lv5pm ar 950pm
DFW-AUS AA 2386 lv 1050pm ar 1145pm

$223

just skip the DFW-AUS segment ...

worry about the return later, BUT BOOK IT ON A SEPARATE TICKET

Southwest Airlines website:

SAN to DAL
Dallas Love Field

DEP SAN
3:15 PM

ARR
10:55 PM

Web Only!
$254 one way.

I doubt you're going to do better than this, or the previous post.

WChou Dec 17, 2013 2:43 pm

I do not see anyone being rude. Folks are just laying out the hard truth. A $200 - $300 SAN-DFW round trip is possible with a 21 day advanced purchase doing off-peak travel. A same day round trip at that price is all but impossible. Employer won't do a Skype interview?

jrl767 Dec 17, 2013 2:47 pm

Southwest has a $250 return on Thurs morning (ironically, via AUS) ...
lv DAL 910am ar 1005am WN421
lv AUS 1205pm ar115pm WN934

I definitely did not expect bullying from my posts...

Last note,
To those who offered help and advice.... Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I'm now seeing that 3:15 SW flight as "sold out".

UrgentNeedHelp Dec 17, 2013 3:05 pm

Wouldn't get there in time with checking in. I am trying anything I can do via internet & phone right now. Thank you for the info.

jrl767 Dec 17, 2013 3:05 pm

don't know if your interview would wrap up in time to make this flight tomorrow ...

Virgin America, $250
DFW-SFO lv 135pm ar 320pm
SFO-SAN lv 550pm ar 715pm

What? You're not at the airport yet? You are rapidly running out of options if you actually want to get there today.

UrgentNeedHelp Dec 17, 2013 3:10 pm

The return would work. I have to be back by Thursday morning. It is a golden opportunity for this interview and if I could drive it I would. Just on a tight budget.

10 min from airport.

Tried all Airline sites. All discount sites like Priceline. Leaving messages for friends. Trying whatever I can think of...

jrl767 Dec 17, 2013 3:13 pm

I know what I'd be doing now ... more importantly, I know what I'd have done half an hour ago ...

Just to note, a lot more people have probably looked at your request, looked up several options, and found absolutely nothing that fits into an extremely narrow request with an unreasonable budget expectation.
I'd echo what people are saying now. If you are dead set on going, go to the airport now, pack a bag, and book something for a flight tonight (not in that order). Worry about getting a flight back later.

UrgentNeedHelp Dec 17, 2013 3:14 pm

I appreciate the info JRL22. I cannot afford the $450 to get there and back right now. At best - $400.

Let me put it rather bluntly, if you get this job, will a $300 difference really matter in the grand scheme of things?

Just buy the flipping ticket, this is your CAREER that you will put in jeopardy for a couple hundred bucks!?

Pretty sure this is helpful.

Good luck, and I hope you return the favor soon on Flyertalk and help others as so many people have taken time to help you. We are not travel agents, but a community that discusses things, not simply spits out information.

And please stop using this as a chat room.

Edit: Note that over FOUR HUNDRED PEOPLE have viewed your request, all in the interest of trying to help. But we can't do magic.

I don't think Adam is being "mean" but is realistic. I would echo the concern that the employer is not paying for this. We have facilities around the country and require candidates for certain positions to be interviewed at corporate. We typically give several days if not a week's notice and always pay for the ticket and related expenses.

If the employer is not willing to pay, it may mean they already have a candidate they are willing to hire and may not truly consider you a candidate.

You can't spend what you don't have....
Again, doing my best with what I have. Can't be stuck out there trying to wing it back.

milepig Dec 17, 2013 3:22 pm

Welcome to FT, by the way.

In all honesty, the reality is that there is no way you're going to get there tonight for $400, it just isn't going to happen. I was just working on alternative airports, possibly flying out at the crack of dawn tomorrow, but the best I was finding was around $700.

The FT community is amazingly resourceful, and if there is a way someone will find it, but I'd be very surprised.

Thanks milepig... I appreciate it.

(As I am unable to send you an email or private message, I'll just post a brief note here, as it appears that you're checking this thread quite often.)

FlyerTalk is a community of travelers and travel-enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the community is NOT a travel agent, nor can it perform airfare miracles. Many members have already spent time offering advice and options. This board is NOT a chat room and personalised attacks/comments are not allowed.

Best of luck with your job situation - hope you find a solution, and hope you'll stick around to participate in the community. :)
