Box instead of bag?
 

My boyfriend will be moving from north dakota to california and I was wondering if he could use a box instead of a suitcase for his checked baggage?

He's flying on frontier airlines and I haven't been able to find any specific information on this or get in contact with someone on the phone regarding this.

Anyone know?

I don't know Frontier's policy, but I do this every summer on UA. I take a trip back east to visit friends and always have a box of local food and other goods I check. Makes it easy for me as the luggage is 1-way only.

I don't know the answer to your question, but if your boyfriend is going to pack his belongings in a box, you might also look into whether shipping them via FedEx ground or UPS ground makes sense. Depending on weight, the cost might be comparable to checking the box on Frontier, and he gets the convenience of having the box delivered directly to his new residence. Check fedex.com and ups.com for rates and time in transit (probably three or four days for ground service from ND to CA).

Back in the days of free checked baggage, I'd routinely end up bringing mid-sized boxed IKEA-style you assemble it furniture home to Florida with me because I just couldn't find the right modern style end tables locally.

This is allowed in Delta, as I've done it numerous times.. Most recently 2 weeks ago. I would assume most airlines allow this.

Only one thing to keep in mind - make sure the box is within the overall dimensions and weight limits. Other than that it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Agreed with all of the above. Add- just check the total check allowance based on class of service.

When my wife and I moved from LEX to SFO we had F tickets, and about 10 boxes to bring with us. These boxes contained the items that the Moving Co would not transport (wine collection, spirits, etc.). Using the overall Delta weight and size limits for that CoS, we shipped the heaviest and largest-possible boxes on the DL flight, leaving the boxes that would not fit on DL and FedEx'd the rest. Kept the FedEx bill as low as possible and didn't incur any DL fees.

I've used a box, the packaging store I bought it at even had one sized specifically for the max checked baggage size on airplanes. Frontier's regulations on size may vary, but I don't see any reason why they would decline the box.

I have used 14 HP DL580 server boxes (who've seen them will understand what I am talking about) to move stuff from one continent to another and within US. No problem whatsoever.

I check boxes quite often when traveling between homes in CC and FL for long term stays. Just make sure you tape entirely around top and bottom of box in case bottom gets wet.

Thanks everyone for your answers! it's a big help! :) If anyone has any info specifically on frontier that would be great, as they dont have actual people I can talk to(which really sucks) on the phone.
