I hope to hang on to this job and get this last kid through school.

In this case I urge you to consider the alternative of renting a room in Philly and going home on weekends. You'll save the daily grind of a long commute that would otherwise sap your time and energy for making a strong impression as a hard worker. A small, Spartan room or studio will further help you focus on doing work after-hours as you won't have all the distractions of home.

As for staying in touch with family, modern communications technology is awesome. Phone, text, email, unlimited long distance, Skype video chat, etc. Far easier now than 10 years ago when I took a job 350 miles away months before my wife could move. And you're not even that far away. It's just a 2 hour trip, so it's no sweat to go every weekend. Maybe even ask your wife to come visit you some weekends to mix things up.
