Well, this should be a short discussion, but then again...this IS Flyertalk!

On international F and J, pax are given an amenities kit. When deplaning, I usually leave mine, sometimes even unopened.

Are these 'fair game' for other passengers as they are leaving the plane? When I leave mine at my seat and exit the airplane- effectively abandoning this- is it acceptable for someone else to pick one up as a souvenir?

The thread on First Class blankets got me thinking... blankets they reuse, and are given to you for use on the plane.... but these kits are expressly gifted to you to keep.

Oddly, I expect these usually get thrown out..... I expect that some FAs if asked "can I grab this as a souvenir for my kid?" would say "sure". But still, just sitting on the seat they aren't explicitly offered with a "free" sign...




So, thoughts?




PS There was that one time where I packed up the duvet and pillow from F.....had to leave a T shirt and pants behind, but it was worth it.

Abandoned magazines, newspapers, and amenity kits are fair game.

Yup. Totally fair game, IMHO. In the old days (before iPads), I always bought a paperback to read on the plane, and when I was done, I left it on the seat or inside the seatback pocket for someone else to find and read. Hopefully, there were other Stephen King fans out there who found a book or two and enjoyed them . . .

Love it when people leave books/magazines. I sometimes leave them when done as well for the next pax to enjoy. Whoever left me the 'Jack Reacher', thank you.

As for amenity kits, I don't see anything wrong with it. The main objection to the blanket thread was that a pax grabbed it BEFORE the flight, not after. If someone reached in and ninja'd my amenity kit before takeoff, I would certainly object.

If unused, I leave it in the wrapper and put it back where it was when I boarded, hoping they reuse them and don't throw them out.

I've only done it once, on LH when they had those cute amenity kits with pictures kids had drawn (2011, I believe). I don't recall which charity it was sponsoring, but got 2 for my kids.

I see picking up somebody else's amenity kit kind of like taking half a box of soaps off the maid's cart. Technically they're free, but they weren't meant for you. Or to make a more precise analogy, if you see someone check out of a hotel room and leave their door ajar, is it o.k. to zip in and take the shampoo, soap, lotion, etc. that they left behind?

Not a crime, but not something I would do. Maybe "dishonorable" is the way I'd describe it.

Does AA reuse leftover amenity kits? Is this a perk for the cleaning staff--free leftover kits? If these get thrown out, wouldn't taking one and using (some or all) of the items be good for overflowing landfills?

Have to admit that in 2011 before LH had its A380 delivered, I flew them in C...they had these nice A380 metal box as amenities kits. As C was almost empty on my flight I picked about 3-4 of them. Kept it as a gift/collector item.

While I have no idea what the airlines do with partially used amenity kits but many hotels donate similar items to charities:

I would hope that the airlines do something similar.

That said, amenity kits used or not are meant for the person sitting there. As such, I think the grabbing of amenity kits on the way out shows a complete lack of class. Do you grab the mint left on a table by the waiter after the diners have left? What about the let over wine in the bottle?

I often do not drink the bottle of water when in FC. If I do not plan to drink it later I leave it on the arm rest for the next person. If another PAX wants it they should ask the FA.

I would never drink an abandoned bottle of water. Even if the cap was sealed. You just don't know these days.....

The amenity kit question is kind of a theoretical one. For someone deplaning from the rear, who's going to take time to look around the FC cabin on the way out for abandoned items? No one, I would wager. Plus, many craft don't even de-plane through the FC cabin.

...if say I forgot to bring ear plugs or wanted to replace my lav socks, but its never occurred to me to give it away to anyone, as I don't anyone who would want one.

We are always last to deplane (wheelchair). A few years ago, we were flying to Germany on LH in C during the holidays. They had Christmas stockings as amenity kits, which were (here's the important part) filled with Lebkuchen, as well as the usual amenity kit stuff. The purser was gathering up the unused stockings, which he offered to us, as we were (still) waiting for my wheelchair. This made my spousal unit incredibly happy, as he loved the LH Lebkuchen. Said it was a great way to start the holidays in Germany. It's the little things, I guess.
