Lie-flat beds SFO --> NYC ?

Does anyone know of carrier offering *true* lie-flat beds on NYC to SFO flights? I'll be taking a red-eye on this route for a business trip. I've never tried a so-called angle-flat seat but I have to figure I'm likelier to catch real sleep on a lie-flat, though angle-flat is the best I seem to be finding.

UA offers Premium Service SFO-JFK and has seven of its 752s converted to lie-flat
And from the UA forum

Have all the PS 752s been converted? Last I saw, and as stated on their commerical, some weren't converted yet so you run the risk of getting sat in a business recliner.

Did you read my post before replying? All the information is there - 7x 752s are converted and I provided a link to the UA status page.

AA begins their SFO-JFK A321 Transcon service soon... Lie flat J and F. Doesn't help for now though...

I believe this is one of DLs premium TCON routes, marketed as Business Elite vs. the usual domestic first. Not sure if it's guaranteed lie flat, but that certainly seems to be the goal.

I missed the Seven part but did want to distinguish the difference that some are all lie flat and some are mostly recliners and only elites get access to the lie flats.

Delta flies 763s with flat beds on select JFK-LAX and JFK-SEA flights, but the JFK-SFO flights (and the balance of the LAX and SEA schedules) are presently served by 752s with old-school recliners. There is BusinessElite service on all three routes.

Delta plans to convert the TCON/TATL 752 fleet to flat beds by early 2015.

AA will be starting new A321 service with full lie flat seats. The planes will be also brand new versus like 20 yr old planes united and delta fly.. What airline program are you a member of or no concern for loyalty? All the major playmakers are catering to the business class consumer now.. If airline status does not play a factor you have many options

No concern for loyalty in this case—I just want something resembling a good night's rest. That said, I'm not actually sure it's true that I have many options, at least in this case—as an earlier poster pointed out, AA's A321 service hasn't started yet, and I'll be flying SFO --> JFK this week. And to those who have mentioned UA's newly converted 752s—unfortunately, the only UA 752 operating on an SFO --> JFK red-eye (at least on the date I'm looking at) has not yet been converted (and thus has the three-cabin configuration).

Ultimately I just have to accept I'll have something other than a lie-flat seat, though in that case, being an inexperienced traveler, I'm not sure what type of seat would give me the best shot at sleeping.

United PS First (not business) has lie flats on the three cabin configuration. Not sure if that's a reasonable option but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

How is it that lie-flats are limited to elites?

Yoshi212 Aug 18, 2013 12:02 am

Currently you can't buy a first class seat on a 3 class 752PS. you can buy Y+ & J. They sell all the flatbed and lounger seats as business to avoid problems when the planes are finished being converted or if a converted plane is substituted in for an expected 3 class. To decide who gets the flatbeds elites are given access to selecting them first and the airline assigns them to elites over purchase category. I've watched it done and got stuck in the lounger as I am statusless this year :(

Anyone got any experience in BusinessElite on the DL-752s? They've got angle-flat seat, per SeatGuru, but I'm not sure what sort of angle we're talking about.

The age of the aircraft is largely irrelevant to the passenger experience when interiors are regularly refurbished.

SeatGuru is wrong. Delta's BusinessElite-equipped 752s have La-Z-Boy-like recliner seats that are a generation older than "angle-flat" products. While comfortable enough for daytime flying, they're not well suited for sleeping. The seats and the armrests dividing them are narrow, so privacy and lateral personal space are not great.
