Pilot rest on 3 pilot planes
So the rules allow for 3 pilot crews to fly up to 12 hours, regardless if there are only two pilot positions or three (as on the DC10 and a few other planes). My question is for flights on say a DC-10 that is going 11 hours, how do the pilots take rest breaks? Do they simply leave the first officer seat open at cruise and have just a captain and flight engineer?

I seriously have no clue. I know on two pilot plains one can leave the FO seat open for short breaks (IE: restroom) and vice versa, but I seriously doubt they'd fly for any length of time that way. probably something better asked on http://www.pprune.org/ :) |
