Passport question

Just wondering if your USA passport number changes when you renew it? I have an expired passport, however I just won a trip to Europe, and need to give a passport number for plane tickets and was wondering if I can give my old one and change it to the new one if it does in fact change.

Thanks,
RF

departure

I am supposed to leave in September and the expiration is Aug 2013. This trip was something completely unexpected so I have already asked for the passport renewal and express ship, but not sure if the tickets can still be booked with the old number.

I renewed my US passport in 2010 and got a new number.

New US passports are given a new number. you can go on the airline's website and update with the new number before departure.

Every new US passport I have ever gotten had a new number

New Passport == new passport number

The passport number isn't part of the ticket. As long as your name is staying the same you should be all set.

To answer the question, your number will change.

You get a new passport number in the US for every renewal/replacement passport.

You can give your old passport number and let the airline update your record at check-in or whenever before check-in that you get it. After getting the new passport, the sooner you get the new number and other passport info into the record, the better.

I usually do such changes online or with airline check-in agents or kiosks. Sometimes it is done over the phone with airline reservation agents.

API (Advanced Passenger Information) can be changed before the flight, and isn't needed before a ticket is issued. I'm not sure if API will accept an expired passport, but if it does then it can always be updated even at checkin.

Perhaps you shouldn't provide advice if you have no idea? The OP's passport has already expired.

Data point, I just did an expedited app. Mailed the app on the 10 July and my shiney new passport was in my mailbox on the 25th.

It's probably just a situation where the agent booking the sweepstakes trip wants to make sure you *do* have a passport. Or realize you need a passport, at least. Just give 'em the old one, and then when you have the new one update it directly with the airline.

Last time we did non-expedited passports for our two daughters, we got them in about 3 weeks. I was impressed at the turnaround time.

book the tix with what you have, and then update it when you get the new one with an agent or at check in.
