Just under weight...
Checked in a single bag today that came in one half kilogram under the upcharge limit. The service agent looked at me and simply said "wow, by a half, good job."
Not that I like to carry a heavy bag, because heavy bags tend to get damaged more, but I have a lot of paperwork I'm carrying with me lately I'm soon hoping to shed. Regardless, anyone else get that curious sense of satisfaction, though, at having packed "just right?" Seems a silly thing to get smug about, but there it was :) |
On my flight to move from LAX to RDU, my bag was 49.5lbs! 1/2 pound under limit.
|
I'm sometimes a pound or two over, but they smile, and just tag it. Being elite, flying in F/J, never hurts.
|
On a recent transatlantic itinerary, I was rerouted from a nonstop flight with no weight restriction to a connection in Europe onto an airline that has a weight limit of 8 kg for carry-ons. The airline for the last leg did not weigh my bag, but if they had, I knew that it weighed exactly 8 kg.
|
I've been within a pound before. Whenever I'm close, I weigh the bags at home to make sure I don't get an expensive surprise at the airport.

January 2013: Leaving HNL.
There was a scale available prior to the check-in counter. The weights for my bag and for Mrs. jerry305's bag: 50.0 lb and 49.8 lb ^^^^ Took it up to the counter: on that scale, it read 47 lb and 46.8 lb. I felt like I wanted to appeal the weight. :( |
My favorite bag, and I often travel together. I guess I must always take pretty much the same stuff because it weighs in around 49 lbs.
|
I was on a seaplane with a 25 pound weight limit. I weight my bags before leaving, made sure not to buy any snacks at the airport and at checkin I was at 25 pounds. With more generous weight limits on mainline carriers I never approach it.
|
Always a sense of accomplishment. My brother, however, borders on the militant. He aims for 50.0 pounds precisely, having multiple hand-scales that he can verify weight prior to arrival at the airport. If he is going to pay money for them to move a bag, he's going to make sure they move everything they are supposed to!
|
These days, I try to stick to around 40 pounds for a longer trip. Seems like (a) everybody's more strict about weight limits these days and (b) I always seem to have at least one check-in along the way (on longer trips) on a 20kg airline.
I've flown PNR's where I've printed the detailed fare rules and found ambiguous wording as to what baggage allowance applies across that ticket number. I always assume worst case: the lowest allowance applies to the whole itin. (Or, in practice, the lowest allowance where you're actually performing a check-in with the bag.) |
i always make sure i'm a 1 lb lighter than their max in case they have a miscalibrated scale. a digital scale is always part of my travel kit when i fly.

Just under weight...
Last time I flew Air France I got a miscalibrated scale by 5lbs. The agent made me go over to the other counter to pay. Then back in-line I go to check-in, this time I get a different counter... My bag was 5lbs lighter. ...!!! Was fuming mad.
|
Ok, I'll admit that once, I casually tilted my foot up (heel on the ground, toes up) and ever so slightly lifted the corner of the scale to get down from 50.3 lbs (or something close to it) to 49.x lbs before the agent noticed.
|
From BDL to LAS one of my checked bags was .4lbs over. The WN agent looked at me and smiled and just gave me a free pass.
|
I just like to guess the weight of my bags and love it when I am really close.
Heaviest I travelled, for a 4 week holiday, was with 4 suitcases, totalling 126 kilos (277 pounds)!!! |

I once hit 50.0 dead on coming back from a camping trip. I'd been just over 49 on the outbound, so I guess the tent must have been a little bit damp still...

Earlier this month, I was flying from the US to Europe and was checking 2 bags. I knew 1 would be fine but the other appeared a bit heavy. So, I place both on the scales to be checked and they were 100.5lbs, so I was only 0.5lbs overweight. The agent didn't make any fuss about it but even if she had, I could have easily removed half a pound worth of stuff and put it in my carry on. I don't believe I've ever been this close to the weight limit.

Once flew Canada to Ethiopia with my wife, two children and two in laws and twelve bags all between 48 and 50 lbs each. Took some considerable arranging at home before we left!
|
Recently got back from a trip to Frankfurt, flying in F didn't have a problem with the weight limit being 70lbs as I was at 65lbs. Connecting to another short international flight that was in Y, I am thankful that my bag was checked all the way through or else I might have had some problems. Glad I got away with that one!

Summer 2012 on LX got pulled in for land luggage weight check. I was at 22.1 KG :D:eek: LittleTykePP40 was at 8.0! :D
