Suggestions for a Couples' Weekend Getaway?
 

Hi all,
I figured this would be a good place to come for resources. It seems my fiancé and I exhausted mostly all options for a quick (driving) getaway from NYC. We are in our mid-30's, love places that offer a lot of options for nightlife but also evoke romance, as well.

We've been to Boston, Mohegan, Foxwoods, and Atlantic City for weekend getaways before. The Poconos seem a bit rundown and lack of nightlife, Hamptons are not really our style...we thought of Baltimore but it's a bit tricky, depending on where you're staying (I know Inner Harbor is beautiful). So, any ideas for someplace less than a 4 hour drive from NYC? Please, thanks!:(

Montreal or Quebec City assuming you have valid passports. Easy drive from the city.

We do but isn't that much longer than 4 hours? I thought that was an average 8-12 hour drive, no?

When we lived in Montreal a couple years back we used to drive down to the city and be there within 6 (sometimes even 5.5 depending on traffic and border crossing). Try a smaller border crossing into the Eastern Townships and make the drive either west to Montreal or east to Quebec (which will be further, yes). We regularly went to Manhattan for the weekend and/or to New Haven to visit family (not quite as far obviously). Try Montreal, you can't go wrong with that city ... Stay in a B&B from airBnB or something like that and experience real Québécois culture - try Le Moulerie in Outremont if you like mussels! Otherwise book a room in Old Montreal and try the eateries there. It's like driving to Paris for the weekend :)

Philadelphia would be a good choice. DC is about four hours away, though traffic can be terrible and it's probably better to take the train (or even a bus) rather than drive. I've never been to Providence but it seems like the type of place that would make for a good weekend getaway.

Wow, well now knowing that it's not that far away, we might go that route! I recall researching Niagara Falls and the Buffalo side was an 8 hour drive away. If we can reach Montreal in under 6 hours, I'm all for it. That is exciting, thanks for the suggestion. I have a feeling he's going to love this idea^ Oh and we LOVE mussels....oysters too!

Thanks, we gave some thought to Philly but it just wasn't appealing to us for some reason. DC is weird, you either like it or you don't...and we don't. :td: Could be b/c I went to school pretty close to there eons ago.

Philly has great options - Hotel Monaco is new with rooftop bar. If you want B&B then Rittenhouse 1715. i love Sofitel.
Mural Arts offer a few tours - the love train is popular. The Barnes collection is fantastic.
Too many fantastic restaurant options to pick just a few. Lots of live music options at night
Philly will surprise you -so much more than history. DM me with any queries if you decide to visit
A different option -equidistant NYC and Philly I'd look at Inn at Woodloch - private, spa, activities but no nightlife

To get to Buffalo, you have to cross all the "width" and most of the "height" of New York State. To get to Montreal, it's just the "height" part plus an hour or so past the border.

Definitely use Google Maps to explore distances between cities, and find best routes.

It's pretty hard to not like Montreal, especially in the summer. Just For Laughs is on now. The city has a heavily funded tourism bureau; call to get more info and ideas.

As for language, I've been to Montreal twice: I never met anyone who didn't speak English well. The few times I tried to speak French, haltingly, the reply was in English anyway.

Spent the past wknd there w/ my wife and another couple (were all in our early 30s)

Near the Hamptons but NOT the Hamptons. Accessible via train or bus if you dont have a car. Close to the North Fork Vineyards. Quiet and quaint with a few nicer bars/restaurants if you want to go out.

Depends on what you mean by nightlife – clubs jumping until 2 or 3am? Or places that stay open so you and the fiancé can keep drinking.

Head further upstate – the finger lakes. Find a B&B in Skaneateles and use that as the home base for wine tasting all around the lakes. Lots of great wines, particularly crisp whites. Also a lot of nice restaurants in the area, but there will not be nightclubs playing loud music until 3am. Should be a little more than a 5 hour drive.

If you were really adventurous, head further west to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. It will be a longer drive obviously, probably around 8 hours, but another good spot to take the fiancé.

Inn at Woodloch is beautiful but as you mentioned, no nightlife. And to answer another post, by nightlife-I think we mean more so options to hear music and have drinks until at least 1 or 2am. Nothing too crazy but we don't want a place where everything shuts down at 11pm. Rooftop bar sounds wonderful.

Great options you all gave. We're going to make a decision tonight. What about Newport, RI?

Hudson Valley, New York!

D.C. remains one of our favorites. We usually fly in, do a day in Virginia Wine Country and then stay in the city in Dupont or Woodley Park. We usually go into IAD in the morning, so Wine Country comes first.

You could reverse the order of those: fly or train to Union Station or DCA, and then do a one-day in-town rental car if you want to go out to VA wine country. Or if wine isn't your thing, just enjoy the city...
