I retired from one of those top energy companies 4 years ago and it was the policy then. I still have friends who travel for them and the policy hasn't changed as of the past couple of months. I work as an independent consultant (when I feel like working) and all of the people I work with (employees and contractors) work under a similar policy.

The price of crude has a huge effect on the oil companies revenue. When oil was over $100 there were 4 or 5 oil companies in the top 10 (or so). When oil collapsed last year they all dropped. So what's true today wasn't true yesterday and won't be true next year.

In 2012, for example, they were 1 and 3 (ConocoPhillips was 4th).

No, I don't check the list daily so I wasn't aware they had fallen. But it makes sense with crude prices. By next year they should both be top 10 again.

My system gives us a price. Whatever you can get in that price is fine. I also get to book my own and get reimbursed plus I get the airline points. (not cashback points)

I am in the banking industry, and while it's true that everyone and his dog is a VP, the last two banks I've worked in changed their travel policy to Directors and above Biz class, everyone else economy

Small business owners like me? I take the view that if it is not worth paying the business class fare it is not worth going.

The world is full of people able (but not necessarily willing) to pay business class fares. If I was working for a big business and having to travel in economy class I would take my skills elsewhere.

I have a similar policy for leisure travel

But I suppose my point is that, J revenue seems to be going up, yet the feeling on FT is that fewer and fewer businesses provide J travel.

Perhaps those people whose business pays for J travel don't tend to frequent FT.

I know a couple people who work in corporate insurance at VP+ levels and their travel policy is F/J on any flights over 2 hours. They really couldn't care less about points/miles, and certainly not upgrades.

I don't think so. In fact I reckon that more businesses than ever before do. It is just that the traditional big hitters have become stingy so people come here to complain.

I'm always skeptical when someone says this. I'm sure there are some people this applies to, but I think the vast majority, regardless of how much money they make or how they travel, will still take their miles. It's like someone offering free dessert after your meal, even if you don't want it then, you'll have them box it up and take it home!

Every major, mid-major, NOC, etc I know still do J for x-oceanic or 6hr+ flights. Haven't heard of them cutting it over last 2 years.

To clarify, these guys have mid-level status everywhere and of course collect miles and use them for personal trips.

But they're only doing so because it requires absolutely zero extra effort, and they're certainly not spending their time bouncing around on FT or MP looking for how to maximize earnings and redemptions. They earn miles/points as an afterthought, and spend them by running a search, finding a flight/room, and booking it.

What I was really trying to say is just that people like that tend to not have a presence on these types of forums.
