Places You Loved That No Longer Exist

I loved the Fetzer Inn, Hopland, in Mendocino County, California. I won a trip there in 2005 or so, which included airfare to SFO, car and accomos for 3 nights (and a dandy cash prize). Recipe contest. The room had a vineyard in the backyard, and you could jump off the terrace and pick a grape. The courtyard had a picturesque herb and flower garden that smelled wonderful. A guy in a booth greeted guests with a free swig of wine you as you drove up. This was a wonderfully rustic place that I was grateful to be able to take my mother to a couple of years before she passed away.

All of Mendo was just amazing, one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Fetzer wines are still being made, but the Inn is closed.

Club Med in Moorea. Spent two great weeks there, two dives every morning, great snorkeling, a private little island just a short swim away.

La Source in Grenada. Hurricane Ivan had it's way and now Sandals have taken it over. We went in 1998 and 2000 and at that time it was probably at it's peak as a luxury spa all-inclusive retreat hotel.

Sigh.

Observation level at WTC.

Last visit was a sunny weekday morning in spring 2001. Even though I know it defies all reason, I have been nervous in very tall buildings ever since, even though I love the views from up there.

Kapulua Bay Hotel. Great place to use SPG points on Maui. Now left with the Westin and the Sheraton.

The Trader Vic's bar at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver.
