For me it's the right side isle. I am left handed and sitting there prevents my elbow from banging into a righty. I do have to remember to keep that left elbow in when the cart comes barreling through the isle.

On the long flights with lie flat beds, it can make a difference, especially if you sleep on your side. Do you want to sleep facing the aisle?

Prefer right or left side of the plane?
always a window, side depends on north/south, morning/evening. I hate the side with the sun.

Right side aisle, always. Don't feel comfortable on the left; don't know why

If there is no scenery to be seen, I generally pick the shady side of the airplane.
|
Complicated decision tree. If window, shady side. If AA MD80 in F, right side (right side seat pitch is slightly bigger than left), row 6 (fuselage widens as you move back from the pointy end), MD80 Y - right side. Except for those specific types of reasons, indifferent.

For most flights I'm not too picky unless I'm flying at sunrise or sunset. Then depending on whether or not I feel like watching it or sleeping will be a factor. Also, if I want to see something specific on takeoff or landing and feel confident in the wind patterns then I will select a certain side. I prefer the left side going in and out of HNL, for example.
And on wide-bodies I like sitting on the right side. I guess it's because I don't get to fly the, too often so when I do I like crossing the aisle to the other side of the plane. Sounds pretty silly probably but it's not something you get to do on every plane. I just prefer window, either side. But this thread did make me go check my flight into LGA later this month so see what view I'd see on the way in (I'm on the right side so hopefully can see the skyline)!

All depends on where you're arriving from (from the west or south or north) and which runway you land on. If you land on Runway 4 or get an Expressway Visual to Runway 31, being on the left side would be better (as I have lucked out with). However if you arrive on Runway 13, then the left side would probably be better. Runway 22 can go either way as one of my arrivals we flew parallel to the East River and then past LGA and then way out over Long Island Sound and then finally back into LGA. Having the left side worked out here because we broke out of the cloud layover just over the Verazzano Narrows Bridge before flying up the East River, offering a great view of Manhattan at night. :) Another time when landing on 22 we flew more up the Hudson and then made a u-turn back into LGA. Being on the right side worked out in my favor (in this case I got one of the last upgrades and the only seats were on the right side so I didn't even get to pick). Unfortunately it's a lot of luck because you can't always predict the wind patterns so you just have to hope you made the right choice.

'Depends - short haul or long haul? F/J/Y?' - general case is "Aisle on the left hand side" - I'm right handed, and 6'1", so that gives me a bit more room - but it depends if I've picked up an injury, so might switch sides if I've hurt my left leg. If it will be a bulkhead then I'll take the window - not on a 747 exit row, that bulge from the door gives you no room at all.
747 J I like 14A upstairs, you get all the storage bins next to you and if I need to get up I can go straight out if nobody is next to me, or over the back/bins between the seat and fuselage to avoid climbing over the other person. |

I've seen two threads in the last week where people have mentioned preferring the right side of the plane. To me, it's symmetrical. Are there benefits to either side that I'm missing?

Left side, window. Strictly out of habit.
|
I stick to the left side. I like aisle seating and I am right-handed...that makes it easier to employ defensive tactics against boarding travelers' hand-carry luggage swinging toward my face.

Lots of factors at play here.
- type of aircraft - some smaller jets have 2 seats on one side and 3 on the other or 1 on one side and 2 on the other - makes a difference when travelling with others - if you like gazing out the window, depending on takeoff/approach patterns, you might miss something cool to see if you're on the left rather than the right and vice versa. I've seen some very cool views of the Manhattan skyline while landing at LGA because I sat on the right that I otherwise would not have seen. - direction of travel - this is my biggest one for me - if I'm taking a morning flight leaving from say ATL and going to SFO, I'm taking the left side so the sun isn't blinding me the whole way! |
