Business Travel vs. Quality of Life - Graphed

I was talking with my friends in international development - we all fly a lot - and we've graphed the continuum of flying from novice to jaded George Clooney up in the air.

I dunno, the more I fly, the happier I am

Now If I ever had to fly for work, shoot me.

Yeah, ^^ I guess you reach a point with the spouse where the promise of flying up front to Paris once a year on vacation won't overcome the realization you're never around.

My theory on biz travel is that nobody gets the right amount. Most get little to none, and a few get way too much. Even if you're clear of other encumbrances like the Clooney character, it's a hard thing to sustain over the long term, especially in an environment where perks keep getting chipped away at all levels.

I'm about to...

.. drop down out of my sweet spot. This year, I'm gonna fly around 50K, so I will lose my status in 2014, and then I'll be on the left in the "not economy again!" zone till I start flying like mad again in 2015.

Since Paris Madrid Milan and London is a regular for me, instead of Overland Park Kansas / mobile Alabama / Biloxi Mississippi / Gary Indiana .... I can't sympathize with the American traveling consultants

Yeah, for every person who gets to fly international business class to Paris or Hong Kong there are dozens having to repeatedly visit plants or offices in boring places, or cover a region on short hauls like a sales rep.

Though, to be fair, Overland Park has great BBQ, and I'm sure if you went to any of the European capitals enough you'd get tired of them, too.

We have a good friend who gets his status on segments every year 60 to 70 a year of the short hauls. Not an easy way to do it. Business travel is at the end of the day business and work. You don't own your time or your plans. Leisure travel is a whole different ballgame.
