Hawaii - Foreign Transaction fees

I live in FL, I am american. Will I be charged Foreign Transaction fees for a trip to Hawaii on my credit cards?

I would guess no, but want to make sure.

It depends. If you change your US$ to Haoles before you go, you probably won't be, although the exchange rate on the mainland is quite poor.

Many establishments will take US$, but unless you have your Mahalo Rewards Card, you will find the trip will cost a fortune.

News flash! Hawaii joins United States! Achieves statehood! But, understandably, some of the underlings don't always get the notices, so I always carry my passport and a request to have the nearest US Consulate notified.

Seriously, though, the haole up charge can be a killer. Make sure you have yor Maika'i card when you go shopping.

Gee I thought you could use Floridian Gator bucks in Hawaii no problem

I don't recall FX fees per se, but I personally find the statewide requirement to conduct all business transactions using fresh whole pineapples as a currency to be quite inconvenient.

Wink

While long ago, Floridians were forced to pay foreign exchange fees for CC usage in Hawaii, in recent years, those who visited after driving/flying to Key West and taking the ferry no longer are forced to fork over. The ferry still charges a small deposit fee for providing personal flotation devices, and "Food for Purchase" remains expensive and of limited variety, although "Moros y Christianos" are reasonable and usually in good supply aboard unless hurricanes with heavy seas disrupt their preparation over charcoal braziers of the fantail.

Sensible visitors should still carry a roll of Maria Teresa thalers for routine transactions.

Sigh! This explains a lot of why they can't count votes in Florida.

they stopped the forex fee, because by raising prices out of sight when compared to the mainland, they picked up the cash as well as the cc spenders....
