mileage runs

This may be a stupid question but if you purchase one of these low fare, travel half way around the world flights just to get miles, would you get the miles even if you never boarded the flight?

If we did, why would we actually need to go on a mileage run? We could all simply buy top tier status for a few thousand dollars.

It's not a stupid question, it comes up quite a bit.

You have to fly to get the miles, and you usually have to stay in the hotel room (or at least check in) to get hotel points. In general, you simply can't just "buy" your status and miles.
