I also think this of Florence - along with a couple of other Italian cities like Siena and Naples. I thought every attraction in them was just an inferior version of something that was in Rome.

Boy, you're aptly named.

As you hint in your first sentence, it's all about how well, and how much you're educated. There's no harm in not appreciating something you know nothing about.

Iceland - Northern Lights / Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon in Grindavik, Iceland. Nothing like sitting in a 104 degree geothermal spa in the middle of winter watching the northern lights.

My most memorable, especially the first time:
The Grand Canyon
Dublin back in the early 80s when it was still "Irish Dublin", not "Euro Dublin"
Rome (still in awe after 5 or 6 visits)
Paris
London (more the 50th time than the first, now very familiar with all of central London)
Normandy
Knock, Co. Mayo, Ireland
Washington, DC
Lake Tahoe
Nikko (in the fall)
ANY "TGV" type train (X2000; EuroStar; ICE; etc)

oh yeah, and Brugges

I quite liked Egypt, but vowed never to go again, unless I pay for flights between the cities. (which are very affordable, and far superior to the 18 hour bus ride from Dahab to Luxor) The sleeper train they have is also posh and economically friendly for the experience.
I would also recommend Pompei near/in Naples. It is an all day trip, and a remarkable site to see.
A Tunisian camel ride into the Sahara at sunset is a spectacular experience, and can provide some great photographs.
Istanbul is also a great city, as you see the mesh of the Middle East and the European cultures, which can be quite exciting.
The fjords in Norway, especially when seen from a boat, are quite magnificent.
But to be honest, the most beautiful place I have ever been, was this summer, when I spent several weeks in Guilin, China. If you aren't familiar, use google images, and to see it in person is just awesome. They stopped doing the ferries to the city from Guangzhou, but you can still get a room on the cargo boats, and to arrive into that city on boat is absolutely remarkable. Again, Guilin is the most beautiful place in nature I have ever experienced.

Top 3 for me:

Hagia Sofia, Istanbul, Turkey - I found Istanbul to be a fantastic, visit worthy city.

Seal Island, Valsbaai, South Africa - Come on, we've all seen Shark Week. It could be the most fantastic natural phenomenon I've ever seen. Worth every penny. It can be coupled with a safari as well, maybe in Kruger National Park.

Rio de Janeiro, Brasil - The entire city is an amazing tourist attraction. The harbor is wonderful and the Christ the Redeemer statue is well worth the hike. The view from the beaches is also quite...visually appealing.
