For those who are truly into art (like my step-daughter), Florence is great. Otherwise, I think a lot of people say they like it because they think they are supposed to. Venice is truly unique with so many varied experiences.

For scenery, I also agree with Lake Tahoe.

One addition in the US - New Orleans, a truly remarkable city.
