Is chewing tobacco allowed on flights?

So this chap sits next to me on my full MSP-SLC flight and right away starts to spit in his disgusting water bottle. Not only was it annoying to see, the smell was absolutely terrible.
I asked him if he was planning on doing this for the entire flight and he just gave me a stupid look. He was unphased and couldn't have cared less about his fellow paxs .
I didn't want to make a big deal out of it and get the FA since I didn't know if that was allowed or not.
Anyways...I felt sick when I got off that flight..yuk !

I believe chew is NOT allowed. That said, with SNUs getting popular it is possible for somebody to have tobacco in and nobody would ever know. They do not produce spit.

In Sky Magazine it also says something like "smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco is prohibited."

From the DL legal page (LINK):

Delta is a smoke-free airline. Use of tobacco products is prohibited on all Delta-operated or Delta Connection carrier flights systemwide.

I wish I would have known that :-(

But it was pretty obvious with his brown liquid in the water bottle

So gross. :( I feel for you, OP - next time, tell a FA ASAP.

chewing tobacco isn't allowed in life, generally.

Or have spent any time in the military. Stuff is everywhere, and some folks are certainly not considerate...leaving their spit bottles wherever they choose. Including on my desk next to my coke/dr.pepper.

Not only is it against Delta's policy, it's against federal law! Should have called the FA.

I am moving this over to Travelbuzz as it is a general travel question and not DL specific.

Sunflower seeds would be annoying as well. The constant cracking of the shell then spiting a bunch of shells into a water bottle

Quite popular in Norway in fact. Lots of young guys use chewing tobacco.

Is that true? Which law?

I always thought that Delta's policy against it was just political correctness masquerading as passenger comfort. After all, there are a lot of activities that do not inherently impact others if done courteously, e.g., the aforementioned eating of sunflower seeds, chewing gum, blowing one's nose. Should all of these activities be disallowed on board? No, only chewing tobacco, because smokers (and all tobacco users I guess) are one group that are allowed to be treated as second-class citizens these days.

I have never seen smokeless cigarettes, so don't know the impact on the environment, but Qatar Airways explicitly states that these are not allowed.

I think it's an FAA regulation...
