First time for me - Locked In Room

So I take my shower this morning and am leaving the room for breakfast.
I turn the door handle and nothing happens.
I'm locked in on the 15th floor.
I call down to the guest and about 10 minutes later, a guy shows up who was able to use an old fashion key to open the door. They needed to replace the inside of the mechanism to repair the door.
When checking out, without asking, they cut the rate in half and added 2,000 Starwood points to my account.

It happend to me the extended stay suites in OKC (a real dump). The lock handle broke off in my hand after I locked it. I couldn't reattach it, and had to call someone to fix it. Only took 2 hours. That was the last time I stayed there. Nothing was offered compensation wise, but then I would not have accepted either...free garbage is still garbage.

My only thought is that in fire situation this could
escalate to very serious quickly... with perhaps a
less than speedy response by staff which would
necessitate a 911 call.

Happened to me in Hawaii - but it was my fault. Had gone out on to the balcony to watch some whales and shut door behind me to keep the a/c on. It locked! Luckily there was someone else out a few balconies away and after some shouting they called down and the front desk sent someone up to rescue me.

In the late 80's I was at a meeting/retreat at La Costa and there was a guest speaker. Pretty well known economist. Middle of the night, he got up to go to the bathroom, opened the door, stepped through and closed the door. Only it was the door to the hall and he liked to sleep naked. Interesting trip to the lobby to get help. Good thing it was pretty late.

Always put the chain over the door - not to keep people out but to make sure a groggy you stays in.

Happened to me in London once.

Woke up during the night because of a red light flash. Was confused but then "realized" that the ceiling was slowly moving down. Panicked, crouched on the floor and out of the room (in boxers). At the last second put a foot to prevent room door from closing. Was sitting like that, 95% in the hall, for a minute or so, realized it was a weird dream/sleepcrouching and went back to sleep.

If I was stuck, I would take out the hinges, but then again I always have tools with me for my job...

Just be glad you didn't get locked in the room--that imaginary ceiling would have crushed you.

Really? That's what you would have done?

So now you have a door completely off its hinges, but your room is still full of your clothes and stuff, so you can't leave. You're just as trapped as you were with the broken lock.

Not if you're checking out!

Less not forget the clothes caper, he lurks in the Hilton's of the world, just waiting for someone to forcefully tear their door apart, once the moment appears, he steals all your laundry! MUHAHAHAH

Obviously, I don't leave things of value in my room, ever.

Happened to me in a small guest house in Sofia Bulgaria. I was supposed to go and meet some friends for drinks around 9:00 p.m, but found out that I was locked in. As I was getting ready to leave, I had heard some footsteps in the hallway. I banged on my door askiing for help until the couple, an American fortunately, responded to the noise. They went and got the housekeeper/concierge/recpetionist/handyman to come and let me out.

MY wife was trapped in an elevator one morning and at a suburban Washington, D.C. Amtrak Station, one her daily trip to Wilmington, Delaware when going to work. She was going to work half day as we had to fly to Paris from IAD that evening. Firemen came and rescued her. Instead of asking her how she was doing, or if it messed up her plans, what Amtrak wanted from her was to sign some papers to the effect that she was OK.:D

I like Sofia Bulgaria. She's very hot on that TV show "Modern Family."
