Help with Visa requirement for Nigerian Layover

I've been having difficulty determining if I need a Visa for a 4 hour layover in Lagos, where I am connecting from Johannesburg to Istanbul. I've looked online and have found conflicting information, some sites state that you don't need a Visa for a layover less than 24 hours and others say you do. The US Bureau of Consular Affairs does't directly address the layover question, and states that you need a Visa to enter the country. I have a US passport and will be traveling in January.

If anyone has experience or information that could assist me, I would be extremely grateful!

Officially you don't need a visa.

If you are used to dealing with Nigeria, you can get away without having one. However, you will need to find and convince the appropriate people to escort you through the right doorways, checkpoints, etc... to enable this. This often requires providing incentives (carrot or stick) for them to expedite the procedure (viz. so that you don't miss your flight, no matter how far away it may be in time).

The simpler way however is to go through the arrivals flow and then back upstairs to join the departures flow. This requires a visa.

You will have to weight the costs and benefits of the Transit experience in each case. If you are a first timer in this part of the world, I would strongly suggest you get a transit visa and choose the latter course of action though.
