Beginners guide to status

Hey everyone,

I a about to begin working after graduating college and will be traveling on a weekl basis. I will definitely be racking up the miles, and earning rewards status with hotels and airlines.

After reading the forums for a couple weeks I see so much about different tiers and programs, but this information can be overwhelming. Can anyone provide a general breakdown of hotel and airline tiers, so I can get an idea of perks and requirements for the tiers? Obviously every program is different, but it would be interesting to understand some of these programs. afaik there was no guide in the forums to these programs.

Read the website for the airlines/hotel chains in question. All your questions are answered there.

Usually airlines award status at 25,000, 50,000, and 100,000 miles but it depends on the airline.

It took me a good 3 months of reading Flyertalk before I began to understood the vocabulary. You need to look at your home airport, cities you will travel to, to make up your mind. Check out the bloggers at boardingarea.com, they have summaries of the various hotel and mileage program. Good luck on your new job!
