Why do I have to remain seated and keep seat belt on while taxiing to gate?
As far as I'm aware, most busses I've been on allow you to stand while they are moving. Is a taxiing aircraft less safe than a regular city bus?

Taxiing to the runway seems self-explanatory, no?
|
Do you wear your seat belt while crusing the mall parking lot at 15 mph?
|
Two reasons:
0. A plane is harder to control at low speed. I would guess that it can stop a lot quicker at low speeds than a bus can. 2. No handles to grab on to. 3. If everyone starts getting up and shifting center of balance, the ride will be even more unpredictable. 4. If for some reason an evacuation is needed, seated people waiting to get up are paying a lot more attention to what's going on than people who are getting their belongings. Having said that, there are a few flights that I've been on mostly in second and third world countries where as soon as the plane touched down everyone jumped up and started getting their belongings. Pointless to stop them -- what are you going to do? arrest everyone on the plane? |
Because even while taxiing if you have a collision it could be really bad.

because it would cost too much to change the fa spiels & retrain them!
i have been on a few flights that did sudden stops when on the taxiways/ramp areas....i wouldn't have wanted to be standing...besides, you have to wait til the door is opened... |
A couple of years ago I was in a QF 737 at Sydney Airport taxiing to the terminal. Suddenly we made a very abrupt stop to avoid some FOD (Foreign Object Debris). The braking ability was very impressive - it would have been unpleasant without a seatbelt and positively dangerous if standing.

there is nothing to hold onto. i think the only reason more people don't fall is the aisle is packed like sardines, and noone can move . could not possibly fall down.
is there an faa reg regarding not up til at gate? would have to designate time when passengers can rise. touchdown, off runway onto taxi way, in parking area, at gate? at gate is the only one that makes sense. sort of like the plane does not start moving until everyone is in their seats.(an easily defined time) |
The people btcing about it would be the same ones to lawyer up when they fall down and go boom...

There's also an even more important factor: What do people do when they get up on the airplane? Get their stuff! People who simply stand are no threat to anyone other than other standees (except for those in rear-facing FA seats.) However, if you have a bag in your hand when the lurch comes you could drop it on someone. |
