a real off topic question

I spend most of my chat group time on a high strung wine taster board. Very often these posts degenerate into arguements, insults and name-calling between the various posters. This is somewhat surprising since I don’t see how you would insult someone you only know through the Internet. Probably represents some sort of Internet road rage phenomena.

On the contrary, I have found all posts on this site to be highly civilized and courteous.

I wonder why this difference? Is because this is more of a help than opinion board? Maybe because wine snobs are just more high strung neurotic people.

Keep reading. There's snarkiness to be found on FT.

Snarkiness, sure, but the mods are pretty good at clamping down on the direct ad hominem exchanges that litter other internet fora.

There's plenty of that around here too :D and probably quite a bit of cross over from here to your wine board.

One of the problems with most of the wine boards is people just don't get that wine is a totally subjective thing. If I say I like something, you have no right to tell me I don't because you don't like it. About half the people on wine boards just don't get that.

I belong to a Belize Travel Forum that is experiencing the very same. There are a few members who insist on insulting others on the public forum for their choice in friends let alone travel choices. I informed the Website owner/master of a particular thread and he's chosen to let it go. Some members get band for a period of time.

Perhaps your Wine Forum is influenced by the imbibing of Vino while posting? :D

This is off-topic for any of our non-OMNI forums. And as the OP and at least another participant are not OMNI-qualified, I'll close this thread. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator.

As a long-time member, let me posit that the differences in climate among discussion boards have a lot to do with the community expectations of the particular board as well as the rules and customs surrounding it. As is pointed out by other members, some boards are tolerant of certain conduct not tolerated elsewhere.
