Regarding the L-1011s to Hawaii question, Delta, ATA and Hawaiian are correct. The other airline is no longer in service though it was a major in its day. Additionally, Sun Country flew DC-10s but no L-1011s.

Also in that group would be Air America (IATA code GM). They operated scheduled service with L-1011s between Hawaii and the mainland in the late 80s.

From a 1986 OAG:

LAX-HNL GM911 10:30am-1:00pm L10 ExMonWedSun

SFO-HNL GM905 10:45am-1:15pm L10 ThuFriSatOnly

SFO-OGG GM921 9:30am-11:30am L10 MonSatOnly

Don't forget TWA!

Didn't know about Air America though. Good one!

Here's an odd one from mid-eighties OAGs ~

What airline provided scheduled though short lived 747 service between Dallas and St. Louis? (Hint: It wasn't American and its 747s were powered by GE engines)

Same as Total Air (above); In November 1986 Total Air changed their name to Air America. Neither incarnation would count as a major, so it has to be Eastern.

It was TWA.

So far as I know, Eastern never served Hawaii.

OAG should also show short-lived 707 service between ALB and STL. That was a sight to see off ALB runway 1-19!

Transamerica Airlines (IATA code TV). Part of their HNL-DFW-STL route in the mid-80s.

From February 1985:

STL-DFW TV1 8:30am-10:15am 747 SatOnly

DFW-STL TV2 8:30am-10:00am 747 SunOnly

You are definitely correct. Eastern never served Hawaii.

I always wanted to book a flight on that 747 service between DFW and STL, but unfortunately just never got around to it in time.

Alright - how bout this:

Name three Asian airlines that operated the Convair 880
How about two more that operated the Convair 990

880s: JAL, Cathay Pacific and Civil Air Transport

990s: Cathay Pacific and Garuda Indonesia

You're right on the 880s and Garuda. Cathay never flew the 990 though.

I suspect we've gotten a bit relaxed on that. Just go ahead and throw one out and see what answers come up... :)

Okay... here are a few.

1. Midway Airlines was the first jet carrier to begin operations following airline deregulation. What were the first three airports it served from Midway Airport back in 1979?

2. What airline, which operated from 1981 to 1987, used the slogan: "That Personal Touch" and which airline was it acquired by?

3. What was the first city outside the state of California to see scheduled service by Air California?

4. Pride Air, created by former Continental Airlines employees, operated a fleet of 727 jets from which hub city for it's brief existance back in 1984?

5. The original Frontier Airlines created and operated a low-fare, non-union subsidiary operating 727 jets during 1984/1985. What was the name of this subsidiary?

Well I know 4 and 5 for sure, especially since I used to work for FL in Denver back then.

Pride Air was based in New Orleans, but I'm pretty sure they were operating in 1986 or 1985. I was booked to fly with them one night LAX-SAN but my connecting flight was late.

The Frontier subsidiary was called Frontier Horizon and flew ex-AA 727-100s.
