Let's return to the days of aviation yore and the 1960's........

2. It's 1961 and you are in New York City. You've just finished up work on a project as a consultant and have been invited to visit with friends at their new beach home in Makaha on the western shore of Oahu in Hawaii. This means a flight to Honolulu is in order. You've found a very convenient departure leaving in the late morning which will arrive into HNL before 8:00 pm. This flight operates six days a week and makes three stops en route. Name the air carrier, the three stops in order and the aircraft type. ANSWERED

3. Now it's 1962 and you are in Chicago. A trip to Montreal is on tap for a business meeting. There's a flight offering first class which departs O'Hare in the late afternoon and arrives into Dorval by 9:00 pm. Two stops will be made and you'll be served dinner en route. Identify the airline, the two stops and the equipment. ANSWERED

4. You're in Mexico City and it's 1964. You need to travel to Los Angeles with a late morning arrival into LAX before noon being the best fit for your schedule. Ah, here's a flight departing MEX at 8:00 am which operates three days a week. Unfortunately, first class is not offered on this flight but what the heck...you book a seat in coach. One stop will be made en route and you'll be served a full hot breakfast. Name the air carrier, the stop and the aircraft.

5. It's still 1964 and you are preparing to fly from Los Angeles nonstop to Chicago O'Hare on Continental. Alas, first class is sold out on the flight that fits your schedule....but the reservation agent then tells you the Boeing 707 you'll be flying on board offers three classes of service, so you won't have to travel in Economy class. What is the name of the class of service you will be in on this CO flight, what is the seating configuration in terms of the number of seats across in each row, and how many seats are there in this cabin? Seat config was 2-3 across and the name of service was Club Coach. Still looking for the total number of seats in the Club Coach cabin which was less than 40.

6. What was the name of coach class on American Airlines Astrojet aircraft in 1965?

7. A very special, high level VIP flight was operated into Page, Arizona in 1965 with a Hawker Siddeley HS-748 turboprop aircraft. Who was on board and who was the operator of the flight? Hint: this flight was not operated by an airline.

8. It's 1966 and you are in Lima, Peru. It's time to get back to business and that means a flight to New York City. You've found a flight that operates three days a week departing at 6:15 am which will get you into New York by 7:00 pm. Three stops will be made en route. You book a seat in first class. Identify the airline, the three stops in order and the equipment. ANSWERED

9. You've just arrived in Acapulco in 1966 following a lovely sail trip up the Pacific coast from Costa Rica. An evening flight to Los Angeles has been booked and you are in first class. This service operates four days a week and two stops will be made en route. Identify the air carrier, both stops and the aircraft type.

11. It's the summer of 1967 and you are back in Chicago. Your old sailing buddy has asked you to check out a catamaran for sale that is moored near Mobile, Alabama down on the Gulf Coast. An evening flight from O'Hare to Mobile would best fit your schedule and you find there is a daily direct dinner flight which makes two stops en route. You book a seat. Identify the airline, both stops and the equipment.

12. Now it's the winter of 1967 and you are once again in cold and gray New York City. Time to go see family and friends for Christmas in northern California! Now you could catch a nonstop flight from JFK to SFO....however, you're in no rush and have instead found an interesting multi-stop flight departing just after 2:00 pm which will arrive into San Francisco just after 10:00 pm. Five stops will be made en route and first class is available. Name the airport you will depart from in the NYC area, the airline, all five stops in order and the aircraft type. AANSWERED

17. It's the summer of 1968 and you are in Madrid. You have been requested to attend a meeting in Santiago, Chile on fairly short notice. You are in luck as there is a flight which only operates once a week that fits your schedule. You will depart Madrid at 11:45 pm and arrive into Santiago at 1:50 pm the next day. Five stops will be made en route but you'll be in first class, of course. Identify the airline, all five stops in order and the aircraft type.

20. Also in 1968, an aerospace firm by the name of Unexcelled, the parent company of Aero Spacelines (the maker of the Boeing 377-based Guppy and Super Guppy outsized cargo aircraft), proposed to build a Concorde training aircraft which included the cockpit section of the Concorde with the moveable "droop" nose of the SST being mounted ahead of the flight deck on the nose of the training aircraft airframe. However, the project never came to fruition. What aircraft type was proposed as the airframe for this Concorde trainer? ANSWERED

The last three quiz items all have a time line of 1969.....

21. It's time for a good, old fashioned milk run on the west coast of the U.S.! You are in Portland, Oregon, your destination is Los Angeles and your daily flight will make five stops en route from PDX to LAX. Identify the air carrier, all five stops in order and the equipment.

24. It's springtime in New Orleans and you've just wound up a project assignment as a consultant. Your good friends in Makaha on the island of Oahu in Hawaii have once again invited you out for a visit with them at their lovely beach house. So you're off to Honolulu. Surprisingly, there's a direct, same plane flight from MSY to HNL which only operates once a week on Tuesdays that perfectly fits your schedule. The service makes two stops en route and a first class seat is available. Identify the air carrier, both stops and the aircraft. ANSWERED

26. You're back in Memphis for a meeting and need to travel to Knoxville for a follow up dinner meeting. There's a daily afternoon flight from MEM that will get you into TYS just after 5:30 pm which makes one stop en route. Perfect! Name the airline, the stop and the equipment. ANSWERED

We are making great progress and here's what's still in play......

1968's landmark Transpacific Route Case ruling allowed four or five airlines to begin service to Hawaii (and in some cases, beyond Hawaii) for the first time. I believe one of those airlines would have been Braniff. Of course, pre-deregulation, when I think of airlines that served both Hawaii and New Orleans, not many come to mind. Braniff and Pan American stand out. From New Orleans, PA was headed for Latin America or Europe via the DL interchange. So that leaves Braniff. I'd imagine that in 1969 BN was using a 707-320 routing MSY-HOU-DAL-HNL

Hmm... United or American? American or United? Let's go with American routing through Nashville with a 727-100

24. An excellent guess, sir! Indeed, it was Braniff International operating a B707-320 (B3F). One of the stops was DAL....however, this flight did not stop at IAH (which wasn't quite open just yet at this time in 1969) nor did it stop at HOU. I can tell you are very close on this one so please guess again!

26. Ah, it wasn't American, the stop was not made at Nashville and the equipment wasn't a 727. Hmmmm, I believe you mentioned another air carrier....

Hmm... there are not a lot of options between New Orleans and Dallas - I'm tempted to go with MSY-SAT-DAL-HNL, but MSY-SAT was Eastern country. Additionally, as this was a once a week service, and DAL was only "one of the stops", I'm thinking this flight might have routed through Hilo. So, MSY-DAL-ITO-HNL with the jellybean liveried B3F

If not American ("Mur-cn" in the local patois) then United running a Caravelle through Chattanooga.

24. Correct! And obviously this flight did not stop in Shreveport prior to the Dallas Love Field stop! Here's the complete Braniff International schedule for all of its service to and from Hawaii in the spring of 1969....just scroll down past the route map:

Braniff International Airways

Now we have had some discussion in the past concerning BN's Hawaii service in 1969. You'll note their flights to Hawaii from MSY all made a stop in DAL as did some of the flights from MIA and HOU. Other flights originating in MIA stopped in HOU before heading nonstop to HNL while the flights from ATL all made a stop in STL. What was discussed was the possibility of Braniff operating 727 equipment on the MSY-DAL, HOU-DAL, MIA-DAL, MIA-HOU and ATL-STL legs instead of the 707 all the way through. At face value, it appears BN did operate the 707-320 (B3F) all the way through on these Hawaii services according to the timetable. I'm inclined to think they did. Also note the information below the schedule page concerning no local traffic rights between the above city pairs (except HOU-DAL) as well as between HNL and ITO.

25. You know, I think I overheard some gentlemen the other day leisurely strolling through the DFW Airport discussing "Mur-cn" and their international flight to "Yerp". They were wearing cowboy hats.....

Meanwhile, United operating a Caravelle is correct...however, this flight did not stop at Chattanooga but at another nearby city instead. Please wrap this one up!

12. Now see how easy that was? There's hope for you yet! Here's the sched....

AA 261: New York Kennedy (JFK) 2:20p - 3:32p Nashville (BNA) 4:00p - 4:46p Memphis (MEM) 5:15p - 6:32p Dallas Love (DAL) 7:00p - 8:12p Phoenix (PHX) 8:45p - 9:26p Oakland (OAK) 9:45p (est.) - 10:02p San Francisco (SFO)
Freq: Daily
Equip: 707 JET
Service classes: F/Y

And as WHBM mentioned recently, the equipment may have actually been a Boeing 720B as American simply listed all of their 707 and 720B flights as being operated with a "707 JET" in their system timetable at this time.

The only other place I can think of would be Huntsville. Or maybe Atlanta, but I don't think MEM-ATL was a UA route. HSV then.

25. Seat 2A has guessed Huntsville (HSV) as the intermediate stop between Memphis and Knoxville.....and he is correct! Here's the complete sched......

UA 828: Memphis (MEM) 2:50p - 3:30p Huntsville (HSV) 3:55p - 5:33p - Knoxville (TYS) 6:00p - 7:10p Pittsburgh (PIT) 7:35p - 8:13p Cleveland (CLE)
Freq: Daily
Equip: CARAVELLE JET

Service class: F

I actually saw this flight on the ground in Huntsville back in 1969 as I was preparing to depart from HSV on Eastern. It was my very first sighting of a Caravelle.

2. Nope, it wasn't United and this flight did not stop at CLE or SFO. The flight did originate at JFK and stop at ORD....but ORD wasn't the second stop. And your guess concerning the equipment is correct as it was a DC8.

20. The good news: it was a Convair aircraft. The not so good news: it wasn't a CV-340.

It wasn't United but it was a DC-8... Hmmm.... back in 1961, I believe only three airlines served Hawaii from the U.S. - United, Northwest and Pan Am - all of which operated DC-8s. Pan Am is clearly out as its authority was limited to nonstop flights from the West Coast to Hawaii. And if it wasn't United, that leaves Northwest which did indeed operate redtail DC-8-30s for a short time. Now then, as to the routing - if O'Hare wasn't the second stop, then it must've been the first. So perhaps we're looking at JFK-ORD-SEA-PDX-HNL.
