There’s a single direct flight that will put you into San Diego in perfect time for a late dinner with colleagues flying in from the Pacific Northwest. Well alrighty then, let's move right on to Round II. As always, please limit your response to no more than two questions per day so that all may participate. And as always, we are looking for complete answers here. Thanks!

36. (2001) Finally! Two direct flights between Austin and Chicago’s Midway Airport! Okay, so there’s a single enroute stop but since Midway’s located on Chicago’s south side, it’s far more convenient to your business needs than O’Hare. Identify the airline, the enroute stop and aircraft type operating these flights.

37. (1975) Per schedules available in an early 1975 North American OAG, identify the easternmost, southernmost, westernmost and northernmost points in the North American region served by the Lockheed L-188 Electra. Additionally, Identify the airline that operates each flight.

38. (2001) After a month of beach combing along Mexico’s west coast, it’s time to return home to St. Louis. Imagine then your surprise and delight to learn that there’s a twice weekly nonstop flight from Puerto Vallarta direct to St. Louis! Woohoo! Book it, Danno! Identify the airline and aircraft you’ll be flying upon!

39 . (1959) You’re flying from San Francisco to San Diego aboard a flight marketed as “The Coronado” One stop will be made enroute and a continental breakfast will be served on the first leg. Identify the airline you’re flying on, the enroute stop and the aircraft type.

40 . (1959) From San Diego you’ll continue on to Dallas, Texas. There’s a well-timed departure out of Lindbergh every Friday evening offering something called Royal Cavalier Service. Hmm. Sounds nice. Let’s book it. Identify the airline and aircraft you’ll be flying upon.

41. (1995) For years you’ve enjoyed escaping the hustle and bustle of your home in Mexico City for your annual ski vacation in Vail, Colorado. The only downside is that for just as many years you’ve had to suffer the discomfort of economy class travel on Mexicana up to Denver connecting to a tiny turboprop into Eagle County Airport. At 6’5” and 230 lbs, you’d really appreciate a more spacious option. Well Señor, that day has arrived – at least on the return flight – with a well-timed online connection offering First Class seats on both nonstop flights. Ay Chihuahua! Book it, Pedro! Identify the airline, the aircraft type and the connecting city.

42. (MISC) What was the first US airline ever to purchase a foreign built airliner? What type of airliner was it?
A N S W E R E D

43. (1965) Per schedules published in a North American OAG from early 1965, this is the longest flight operated by a propeller driven aircraft. Identify the airline, the aircraft type and the route.

44. (1995) Per schedules reflected in the North American OAG, three airlines operate scheduled flights with 747s into Miami. One airline operates its 747 in a single class configuration (Classes: TQ), one operates in a two class configuration (Classes: J/YMBH) and one in a 3 class configuration (Classes: F/C/YBQ). Identify each of the three airlines.
Tower Air (JFK) and Air Canada (YYZ) have been identified. Still looking for one more...

46 . (1959) (The jlemon Special) Who’d have ever thought that there’d be a direct flight from Istanbul straight through to Buenos Aires? Not you! But sure enough, there is one operating every Thursday morning. Only thing is, eight stops are made enroute. Holy moly! Still, you’re up for an air tour, so you book yourself a seat. In First Class, of course. Identify the airline, all eight stops in order and the aircraft type.

47. (2001) Oklahoma City to Albuquerque is just a little too far to drive, so you pick up the phone and call TWA. Whaaaaat?! TWA doesn’t fly to Albuquerque anymore? Not from OKC they don’t. The agent kindly informs you of the airline that does. This airline offers three daily nonstop flights (except weekends). Identify the airline and the aircraft type operating these flights
A N S W E R E D

48. (1975) What a great way to break up the winter blues. After driving down to Florida, you’ll be heading to St. Maarten for a week of sailing around the eastern Caribbean. Only one airline provides direct flights from Miami to SXM – a daily 2 stopper - and thankfully they’ve got plenty of seats available. Identify the airline, the aircraft and the two enroute stops.
A N S W E R E D

49 . (1959) You’ve had a wonderful time sailing from Bermuda to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Too bad you can’t sail home to Chicago. Fortunately, one airline operates a direct two-stop flight from Montego Bay straight through to Chicago. You won’t have to connect in Miami! Woo Hoo! Name the airline you’ll be flying, the two enroute stops in order and of course the aircraft type.

50. (1995) Mexico City is well served with flights from the Bay Area airports of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. San Francisco has a wide variety of nonstop or direct flights from multiple airlines. San Jose and Oakland are each served by a single airline offering direct flights to MEX. Identify each airline with direct service from SJC and OAK to MEX as well as the type of equipment each operated on its respective flights.

51. (1965) In early 1965, the plane spotting at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport is pretty good with a nice variety of jets and props coming through each day. There are however two types of jet aircraft regularly seen at your old hometown airport in Cleveland that at present are not seen in Phoenix. Identify these two aircraft types, keeping in mind that it’s early 1965.

52. (MISC) The world’s three oldest airlines are celebrating and/or will celebrate their 100th Anniversaries in 2019/2020. Identify each airline in order of oldest to third oldest, as well as the original name of each airline when it was first formed.

53. (1975) You need to fly from Guam to Tucson, AZ. You’ve found a routing that involves three flights – each operated by a different airline, but each utilizing the same aircraft type. On one of the flights, the aircraft is operated in an all-economy class configuration. In each case, connection time will be no more than 2 hours 15 minutes. Please identify the routing, each airline involved and the aircraft type.
The airlines we're looking for are TWA, WA and AA. The aircraft is a 707. Now then, which one flies which route?

54. (2001) For years it seems like the only places you could fly direct to out of Bangor, Maine were ex-Northeast Airlines routes down east. Things are looking up though with a new two-stop direct flight from Bangor to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Identify the airline, the enroute stops and the aircraft type to be used on this new service.

55 . (1959) You’re booked aboard a one stop flight between Montreal and Bermuda marketed per the schedule as the “Honeymoon Special” It’s a Saturday only departure which works perfectly for you and your wife who are celebrating your 8th wedding anniversary. Name the airline you’re flying upon, the enroute stop and the aircraft type.

56. (1995) You’ve just been offered a chance to join the editorial staff of Milwaukee based Kalmbach Publishing, publishers of your favorite monthly periodical, Trains Magazine. First however, you’ll have to fly to Milwaukee for an interview. From your home in Salt Lake City, you’re surprised to find that no airline offers nonstop flights to Milwaukee. In fact, only one airline even offers direct flights with two almost daily departures. You book a seat on the afternoon flight. Identify the airline, the two enroute stops and the aircraft type.

57. (1965) You’ve been working with the New York State Board of Licensing for three years now and finally you get your first travel assignment – a convention to be held in Indianapolis next month. Flying out of Albany, you’re expecting to have to make a connection somewhere along the way, so you’re pleased to discover that there’s a five stop milk run serving this route each day. Oh goody! You do love a good milk-run! Identify the airline and aircraft you’ll be flying upon, as well as the five intermediate stops in order.

58. (MISC) Identify the only airline to operate all five variants of the MD80
A N S W E R E D

60. (1995) Both before and after deregulation, airlines varied greatly on seating, inflight lounges, etc. throughout the plane. Some airlines offered First Class legroom while others packed in the seats. When I worked at Frontier our First Class legroom configured 737-200s were outfitted with 106 seats. By contrast, America West's all Y Class 737-200s had 120 seats. Identify the U.S. airline that operated scheduled flights with a 737-200 outfitted with just 72 seats.

61. (1975) You need to fly from San Juan, PR to Boston. Both of the nonstop flights are sold out but there is a single daily one-stop direct flight that does have space in both First Class and Coach. First Class, please. The flight also has an equipment change at the enroute stopover point. Identify the airline, the routing and the two aircraft types employed on this flight.

62 . (1959) You’re flying on a domestic flight to Miami, Florida. The service could not be finer and you can even have a drink in a galley equipped lounge after lunch. Only one flight fits the bill. Identify the airline and which city you’re flying into Miami from.

63. (Winter of 1975) Based solely upon schedules found in the North American OAG, identify the longest nonstop flight of a Lockheed L-188 Electra found therein.

64. (MISC) Identify the first African airline to operate a fleet in excess of 100 aircraft (At the same time, not total)

65. (1975) You’ve just received an invitation from an old business associate to join him and his wife on a ski trip in Park City, Utah. Can you make it? Oh, you betcha! For sure though, there’s nothing direct between your home in Fayetteville, Arkansas and Salt Lake City. A call to your travel agent reveals that there’s an excellent online connection (same airline all the way through) that’ll get you into Salt Lake City mid-afternoon on Saturday. It’ll involve a one stop flight to the connection city and then nonstop to SLC. Identify the airline, the connecting city, the one enroute stop on the first flight and the two different aircraft types involved here.

53- hmmmmmmmmm ... no wide-bodies that I can recall into TUS from anywhere that would have also had nonstop HNL service, and I can’t think of any airline that might have served either GUM or TUS with a DC-8, so we’re looking at a 707 ... Pan Am on the first leg to Honolulu (HNL), thence Western to California (LAX, SAN, SFO) ... I think the only realistic choice here is American from LAX

Sorry, T - no cheese. T&W's Fokker F-10s were built under license to Fokker by the
Atlantic Aircraft Corporation, right here in the good old U.S. of A. Please, guess again!

Now you're talkin'. Great Plains is correct. Flights departed OKC most mornings (X67) at 7:20a, 11:50a and 4:50pm.

I logged my first flight aboard the 328JET two years ago from Denver to Sheridan, Wyoming aboard Key Lime Air, d.b.a. Denver Air Connection. You can read all about it right HERE

Nice job of deduction there, Detective 767. You are correct in regard to routing and aircraft type, but one airline is off. I'll bet you can figure it out without me telling you which two are correct. Which airline do you think operated in all-Y configuration? It's not a necessary part of the answer - just idle curiosity.

So close! You've got the correct airline and aircraft types involved, but your routing is off. Neither Wichita or Denver were involved in this routing - strange, this being Frontier, but that's how it is Let's polish that routing off correctly and move on to two new questions tomorrow.

Wow, they are still around in the U.S.?

I flew aboard the 328JET only once in 2001 aboard Delta Connection/Atlantic Coast Airlines, which no longer exist. ACA tried to be one of the big guys by starting Independence Air, which failed. The plane I miss, though, is the BAe RJ85 which I flew aboard many times operated by Northwest Airlink/Mesaba.

The exact same aircraft, the former Mesaba fleet, still come through London City here every day. Irish-based airline Cityjet bought the whole fleet, and operate ACMI services for various carriers. The ones here are liveried in Aer Lingus green for the run to Dublin, and Air France use a number of them out of Paris, as well as them turning up elsewhere. In fact I looked up at EI-RJI (Mesaba's onetime N521XJ) only a few hours ago, as it departed.

We have 328Jets through here every day as well, in full BA livery, which come as a surprise to some.

Frontier Airlines CVR/73S is correct. Still looking for the routing including connection point.
48. St. Maarten was still relatively undeveloped during the mid 1970s and I think the only major U.S. air carrier serving SXM back then was Eastern with service primarily from their San Juan hub and also from New York. However, I do not think this two stop service was operated by Eastern. So let's go with an air carrier that operated a milk run of sorts which we have discussed in the past between Miami and the French controlled islands further south: Air France. I'll guess the equipment was a B737-200, perhaps in all-coach configuration, and the two en route stops were Port au Prince (PAP) and San Juan (SJU). And I also wonder if this was back when the aircraft operated on this service was actually a Western Airlines 73S operated by WA flight crews under contract to AF.

65. Let's see if I can complete this one: I know that Frontier operated nonstop service between Dallas/Fort Worth and Salt Lake City during ski season back then with the B737-200 although the nonstop flights may have been on the weekends only with one stop service on weekdays. So I'll guess this was indeed a 73S nonstop to SLC with DFW being the connection point. And as for the originating CV-580 flight from FYV (the old airport) down to DFW, it probably stopped in Ft. Smith (FSM) with this route being inherited from Central Airlines.

And now to the lawn mower on a pleasant Saturday afternoon......

Lucky you! I loved the 146/RJ85s as well - at least the ones I flew upon with Northwest, Ansett and Air Botnia where economy seating was in a comfortable 2-3 configuration. The ones operated by Air Wisconsin on behalf of United Express were 3-3 and decidedly less comfortable. Additionally, Northwest/Mesaba's had that nice First Class cabin with seats every bit as comfortable as those found on larger jets (a pleasant departure from the hard, comparatively narrow 1-2 configured seats offered in "First" aboard aircraft such as the ERJ-170/90 or CRJs)

We have 328Jets through here every day as well, in full BA livery, which come as a surprise to some.

Denver Air Connection still operate the 328JET out of DIA, though to a very limited number of destinations. It may well be the only remaining 328 operator left in North America. Do you know of any others?

I may have beaten you to it. Because in 1972 I was at this cold, wet, sea of mud : The Grateful Dead at the Bickershaw Festival 1972.

You did indeed. Although I grew up listening to the Dead and other similar bands of the day, I didn't get to my first show until December 31st, 1976 at San Francisco's Cow Palace. Like I say, I was extremely fortunate to have been able to attend as many shows as I did. Everybody I knew would have gone to as many or more had they been able to. I have a big box of ticket stubs that I will make into a collage one of these days...

P.S. I see the Bickershaw Festival show is still available to enjoy over at archives.org. HERE is a link.
