Keeping the window shade open on long flights
 

For those of us who like to sit on window seat (or even anyone), do you guys like to keep the window open ?

I was looking at a video of how the new B787 will allow you to keep the window open (dynamic window tinting, ha), without letting light in disturbing other passengers.

So I was wondering, is there some 'rule' that windows should be closed at certain times? I for one like to keep the window open as I like to stare outside, but at the same time, if most everyone else has the windows closed (wanting to go to sleep?), I feel bad and feel compelled to close the window to be nice.

What are your thoughts?

I think the person in the window seat controls the window. Those in the middle or on the aisle, can close their eyes or put on eyeshades if they want to sleep. When I'm in the window seat, I tend to keep it open unless the sun is just shining through too brightly.

When I'm in the middle, I have no more right to insist that the person in the window seat put down the shade than I would have to insist that they open it because I'd like to look out. Which sometimes happens - I sit there thinking how much I'd like them to put the shade up, but I'd never dream of asking them to.

There is absolutely no reason to keep the shade up on an overnight transatlantic. The night is short enough.

You're right. Keeping the blind down keeps the dark out nicely.

I find it much too windy to leave the window open.

I agree that keeping the window open creates too much breeze.

The window shade question has been hashed over ad nauseum, just do a search on Window Shade. Many of these threads have become quite heated between the open and close crowds, and have ultimately been locked.

Window open? Isn't the wind really bad when you do that?

Sometimes I wish the window would open when my neighbor passes wind. Is that the same thing?? ;)

I personally like the fresh air. And it's fun to stick your hand out the window and pretend it's a wing.

I like to have the window shade open while taking off and landing.. get to see a view from overhead..

You could ask politely, and see what the window seat person says.. if not.. no loss..

When taking the night flight on SQ from Europe to SIN they make an announcement to close all window shades.

On all my TATL flights the FA walks around to tell everybody to close the shades.
