EZ-Pass on Airplane

I want to bring my EZ-Pass on the plane in my carry on, but do not have the shielding bag. Will this be a problem?

Wrap it in tin foil. That's how mine arrived when it was mailed to me. (That said, I think the transponder readers on toll roads are really pointed at the road. I can't imagine the signal is very powerful--after all, you're not charged when you're on the highway drive past an off ramp that has a toll booth, are you?)

I was more worried about it interfering with stuff on the plane. I thought about the tin foil, but am afraid TSA may think it is something else.

Wrap it in tin foil or don't. It won't matter. I've done this numerous times (never wrapped it) and I've never incurred any incorrect or unusual toll charges.

I brought along my EZPass when I flew to MIA for the FL driveout. I asked the TSA agent if I should take it out of my bag and put it in the bin with my cell phone, etc. He said no. A few weeks later, I took the EZPass to SFO for my cross country roadtrip. Again, no problems at airport security.

Well, you don't need to wrap it until you are past security if that's worrying you.

In reality, the EZ pass transponder just sits there listening until it gets a signal from the toll booth, then it wakes up and sends (transmits) it's ID. So even unwrapped, there won't be any real issue in the plane.

There have been a few threads about bringing them on planes in the past, search for EZpass to find them

They're RFID, so they're not putting out any signals until activated by an RFID reader. They're no more dangerous than a credit card with an RFID chip, or an employers' ID badge with an RFID chip to unlock doors that one might carry with them on a plane when flying for business.

And if you're worried about toll booths on the ground reading it and charging your account - they're not going to read it when it's 30 feet away, they're certainly not going to read it when it's 30,000 feet away. If your plane gets close enough to a toll booth to read your EZPass, then you've got bigger problems than a few bucks being charged to your EZPass account ;)

If you have RFID cards not wrapped in tin foil you shouldn't worry about the ezpass, as it's the same thing.

Thanks for all the advice. I was not really worried about it being charged, more about the electronics being on thing, since it does not have an off switch. Guess I really don't have anything to worry about.

No worries :)

If an EZPass could harm a plane, don't you think Al Qaeda would send their minions on flights armed with EZPasses? ;)
