baggage regulations

hi there all

does anyone know if t there is a document which contains the regulations for checked luggage for most of the major airlines?

i was checking american airlines reg. and they say

Baggage measuring more than 126 in/320 cm will not be accepted as checked baggage.

does anyone know if thats linear inches or do thjey allow you to travel with a 10 ft item?

thanks alot for any and all help

I'd call into the airline and double check.. There may be an extra charge.

IME that total is always the sum of length/width/height..

So to carry something 120" long it would have to be a pole of some sort..:D

.. and I believe restriction on "single dimensions" (eg length) can apply as well... most often when smaller aircraft are involved, although I suspect 10' might be over any maximum anyway...

My usual airline (NZ) for example has a maximum length for any checked item of 2.5 metres... (8' 2.5")... which is reduced to 1.8 metres for their regional aircraft...

Welcome to flyertalk. The best source would be from each airline's website. Anything else would probably quickly go out of date.

From the American Airlines Luggage Page:

The size limitation of your luggage is calculated by adding the total outside dimensions of each bag, that is, length + width + height.

Normal size bags have to be 65 inches or under for the sum of the three dimensions. If it's over 65 inches and less than 126 inches it would be oversize, and subject to a $150 extra cost in the US.

So yes, if your package was 10 feet long and three inches high and wide, it would still be able to be checked for a fee.
