Mine doesn't scan either, but I've never been given any trouble by it. The agent usually just types the information if it's necessary. Too many years in my pocket I suppose... :)

Alas I carry my (USA) passport in my shirt pocket normally. And over time the front cover has become "bent".
At the time it was issued the scan text was printed on the inside of the front cover. If the cover is bent in any way, the likelihood of the passport scanning by being drawn through a reader is essentially zero. OTOH, the Aussie authorities use a place the passport page on a glass plate, and have no problems scanning it at all. Has anyone complained. The occasional check in agent gains a somewhat peeved look. No issues at Immigration. I believe the scan text is no longer on the inside of the cover. Happy wandering Fred |
Timely thread. My passport took a trip through the wash in 2008. Funny thing is, although the outside cover is a bit worn, all of the pages are intact and there is no bleeding.
Last month, my wife and I embarked on a six-month trip through SE Asia. We booked one set of tickets on B6 from IAD-JFK, and then had award tickets on CX in J from JFK-BKK. We spend the weekend in NYC, and then upon check-in at JFK, the BA agent handling my flights gave me a lot of crap because my passport wouldn't scan. She checked with her supervisor (I guess they have a scanner in the back); she told me she was able to get it to scan, but had she hadn't, I wouldn't have flown. Traveling through Thai, Malay, Indonesian, and US customs, not a SINGLE peep on how my passport didn't scan. I'm glad to know that this is a "rogue" agent/sup/station. P.S. Oh, and Fred is right. My passport has the info on the front cover; my wife's passport, issued last year, has it on a separate page. It also looks like her cover is a bit more rugged. |
Having a passport go through the wash would be a pain.. Its hard enough getting a canadian passport, let alone trying to get a replacement one!.

That makes a lot more sense than fining someone because their "machine readable passport" can't be read by the machine.

This may not make sense or we may not agree with it, but consider the alternative:
