any tips for my first long haul for years..

I've blown loads of points & cash for a special trip next year so was thinking
has anyone any suggestions/tips to make the most of it. More used to short haul european flights so any thoughts welcome...my wife says do we really have to check in three hours before departure at Heathrow...

Cont Air Heathrow to Newark for the night
Newark to San Juan for ten days
Bus Class

US Air San Juan via Charlotte to Washington for a couple of nights
United Washington to Heathrow
First class

Thanks for any advice

If you haven't been in long haul for years, I would suggest not wasting money/miles on first class or business class. All the comfort you expect in F will be found nowadays in the premium economy cabin.

You could be right but it did come down to the options available re dates/routes/destination etc etc and we are talking hundreds of pounds rather than thousands. Purely based on some googling I understand I may not be too excited about some of the airline lounges either....but it is a special holiday....

Anyone checked into Heathrow lately for a Cont flight - is a three hour
check in essential....

Yes, because they have to get your name on the flight manifest. The flight is inbound to the US.

I fly Los Angeles to London at least once a year, always in Coach. I have three essentials in my carry-on:

A Kindle full of books and the current Los Angeles Times
A 60 gig iPod full of music, audiobooks and podcasts
A "killer" Sudoku book.

I can read, listen to music, audiobooks or podcasts and solve Sudoku puzzles to my heart's content. Last month, I was mildly surprised when we started the decent into London, as I was so involved in an audio book.

I never rely on the airlines In Flight Entertainment.

One other tip. Stay hydrated. Lots of water. Miminal (or no) alcohol.

Thanks for the tips - I'll particularly remember the one about not relying on in-flight entertainment.....

Not really as I have business out and first back - that should be a highlight.
That's what I think 100,000 points and several hundreds gets you.
Only taken what seems like a hundred years to save them up....

No. Just get there 1.5-2 hrs before and you'll be fine, especially that you're not flying in Y.

Remember that CO and UA are in different terminals . Since you're in BIZ, chances are you'll have a great seat and good IFE. On UA on the way back, you'll have flat beds so you'll be able to sleep.

Not sure about CO lounge access at LHR.
