Depends where you are. There are some $250 transcons from SFO today on a variety of carriers (DL, US, UA). You're also in peak season right now and might see lower fares in other markets after Labor Day. It helps to be in a market where there is competition.

That's uncalled for.
"Who really doesn't want cheaper tickets?", would be a more appropriate question.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry: BlackBerry8530/5.0.0.601 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/417)

Air fares will come down; they will also go up. The tricky part is figuring out when each will occur.

Depends what you quote as affordable. Coming from Australia I would be exceptionally excited to see a business class fare on a reputable airline for $5500 from SYD to JFK. Others who don't live as far away as we do would recoil in horror about that unaffordable airfare.

Probably the best answer is that if they aren't affordable for you now they probably won't be in the future.

In my experience, airfare has stayed relatively the same price while costs have gone up (although airlines have cut back on the service they offer and now charge for things they didn't before) so outside of the occasional fare sale, I don't see them coming down by a large amount.

A part of it also has to do with where you're flying from. Major cities tend to be less expensive than smaller ones.

http://www.airlines.org/Pages/Annual...-Domestic.aspx

"Including reservation change fees and bag fees, the average round-trip domestic journey price fell from $442.88 in 1979 to $283.97 in 2012."

FWIW- I've been tracking airfare costs for 16 years from my home airport in the US to our annual vacation destination the Caribbean. The route involves 2 to 3 connecting flights in the US and one direct flight to the island. My experience with the trend in prices is similar to that reported in the link above.

I don't track prices for work travel. That would give me a headache.
